Can you name and roughly appraise these gems?

Hi there,

I was wondering if any experienced gemologists can specify exactly what types of gems these are and how much they would be worth per carat roughly in the state they are and after cutting and polishing. Thank you for anyone that can help.

Welcome to ALF VP1,     Would suggest you take them to a lapidary/rock/mineral club as the people there would be able to physically work out what most of the gems are.


We would mostly be guessing. KK78MMM most likely garnet, dWXXvwp possibly a beryl or tourmaline by structure

Just Guessing, It's very hard to ID from a photo.

Topaz, pretty sure.
Garnet of some kind, possibly Almandine, pretty sure on Garnet , unsure which variety.
Rose Quartz? unsure but likely.
Fluorite? unsure, Would need to have in hand to ID properly.
Beryl or Tourmaline? Would need to have in hand to ID properly.
Sapphire? Likely, but, Would need to have in hand to ID properly.

I think you would struggle to get anyone at a lapidary club to offer an appraisal, they are amateurs, keen and knowledgable but still amateurs, they may be happy to help with an ID though.

Welcome to the forum VP1. Positive stone identification is nigh on impossible through photos only, there are many things to take into consideration such as location or area found. To define what a stone is there are also tests such as refractive index, specific gravity and hardness. These can be carried out by amateurs but they take time and need to test the actual stone, also not all amateurs have the equipment to carry out such tests. Positive ID is needed before anyone can put a figure on how much they could be marketed for. They would be worth more cut and polished, but most of these appear to be stones that would need to be faceted to show them to their best, a time consuming and potentially costly exercise if you're paying someone else to do this. I doubt if you could sell them for enough to make your costs back. Having said all that, I agree with Rusted and his visual guesses. Keep in mind that the clear ones could also be clear quartz, the pink ones could be morganite and the blue/green crystals could be tourmaline or beryl. Bottom line, they need to be seen and more questions asked before definitive ID can be made.

Agree with Rusted on the IDs. Dr Google could probably give approximate values / carat but there are other variables determining quality & what someone might be prepared to pay.

Whatever a theoretical value might be it is then a matter of how to sell and where find a customer. As suggested they need to be assessed preferably by a gemologist. With that done you could try putting them on ebay or at a local lapidary show if you have one coming up in your area.

So the best way to get a precise information for these rough would be definitely a better way to make sure its 100% accurate. From a gemological point of view; usually they would do all the steps to ID a natural stone. Since most of them seem in quantity and semi precious stones it would be best to send to someone like us (Navneet Gems) to give to a local lab here which can make ID for a lot of natural rough stones by checking their RI (refractive index), SG (Specific gravity), Microscope (to find amazing inclusions that are diagnostic of stone properties). It will be very easy to guess but the answers will not be accurate and from a scientific point of view very wrong. I do hear you Bucket, but my question would've been how they came to be in his possession without him knowing what they were/are...after a welcome though...but I still would've queried it.
