Title: Harts Range and pets
Post by: Sioux on February 13, 2013, 04:39:27 PM
We are planning on heading out to Harts Range for the first time at the end of May and was wondering if anyone can tell me if dogs are allowed. We have one dog and prefer to camp out bush but only if allowed.

Hi Sioux,
A note of caution, the wild dingoes at mudtank seem very territorial and one called "Ernie" by the locals ignored people but headed straight for a dog that visitors had let out of their car.  Was also told that eagles often grab small white dogs. That being said dogs were accompanying campers at gemtree without any problem.

Yeah I think if you stick to the main camping area would not be a problem but if you decide to head elsewhere remember that virtually all fossicking areas form part of a cattle property.

These guys bait for dingos with 1080 or Strychnine (cant spell but you get my message).

They often use cowhide so it lasts a long time.

2 true about the dingoes at mudtank, stayed there 3 weeks last year and saw their tracks around my washtubs on several occasions. Also heard about a doggie taken at night, so good supervision should do, as lots of people had dogs with them. I eblieve the baits would be mainly near the garnet areas as most of that is allpart of a station.

Thanks for the feedback. Haven't made any dead set plans on where we'll end up camping but we'll sure be keeping any eye out for dingoes. We always take our dog to Mt Surprise with us and keep her close to us as we often hear dingoes out there as well. Her waist line is a little large for any kind of large bird to fly away with her ;D

Hey Sioux,
I stayed for 2 nights at Gemtree $32.00 night and then camped out at Mudtank for 3 weeks for free but you need to be self sufficient in all ways... Gemtree was handy to fill all the watertanks b4 going out there after such a loooooong drive getting there. You can also go back to Gemtree and fill all myour watertubs again for about 50cents each.
Just a liitle food for thought.
Cheers beers
