Wednesday finds
« on: October 22, 2009, 01:35:58 PM »
I think a new topic is in order now that the New England trip has come and gone.
Many of you will know that Sue and I head out most Wednesdays to seek our fortune, leaving from the Glen Innes Baptist Church at 9 am.
We had 7 people with us yesterday and because of the continuing dry weather made it easily to "Down the Hill" on Yarrow Creek. One of the vehicles with us was a campervan, which shows how easy it is to get around in the granite country when it's dry.
We've been to this place many times and once again saw the work of what I call "poachers" - people who don't have permission to be there and certainly don't pay the landowner for the privilege of being there like we do.
Anyhow, they didn't get them all. Everyone in the group found something good enough to make them happy. My two pics show the two best sapphire (3.8 and 3.2 carats) and 4 garnets totalling 9.1 carats. There are more where they came from and if it doesn't pour on one of the days before next Wednesday (as has been threatened), we'll be back there agin on 28th October. :)

Hi Merryn
We'll probably be back down there before then, looking forward to some fossicking Tassie style.

They seem to taste better in Tassie, maybe it's something in the water beers. Besides that I was talking to some fossickers from our club that went down in March and they did okeydokie ;). Im into brain picking mode.

Lesley's snoz will be ok because we'll come down during warmer weather 8). I wouldnt be able to get her anywhere near water if it was a little chilly and it wouldnt be just her snoz that would need defrosting :o.

It was too wet to get into Yarrow Creek this week so we went to Rainy Swamp. Nothing exciting - the usual small sapphires/zircons and quartz crystals.

We had some dry weather and easily got into Yarrow Creek at "Down the Hill". The water was up a bit but it hadn't washed a lot of sand into the hole I had worked in 2 weeks ago.  :D
The last few seives were the best (naturally) and there wasn't time to pick through them there, so I had to do it at home. Always fun.
Since Friday we have had 56mm of rain. If we get dry, windy and warm days until Wednesday  :) then we might make it out there again. Otherwise it will be one of the drier places, probably Pretty Valley.
Pic 1 lots of corundum
Pic 2 the best garnet and zircon
Pic 3 a nice dog tooth crystal
Pic 4 the best of the sapphire
