Dragonfly Pendant
« on: December 23, 2008, 09:28:21 AM »
In reply to Fossickeract's comment on the photo.
I cut this a few years ago now for a workmate who was leaving and had a love of everything dragonfly. I used a very pale lilac amethyst, I designed the pattern on Gemcad, when I cut the pavillion, so the dragonfly was visible I left the mains at 1200 grit stage and polished the dragonfly so that it created the illusion of what you can see. The stone was 12mm in diameter so was a decent size. Since then I have lost the pattern so need to recreate it once again.

Hi,
That's really amazing !  I've never seen anything like that done before.  I'm about to start facetting & am keen to try something like that when I get some practice. Thanks for enlightening me to the possibilities :D

Thanks Paul,

Do you have Gemcad? I find it great for designing unusual cuts like this. Perhaps I could compile some kind of booklet, with animal related designs sold exclusively through Aussie sapphires  ;) ;) One can dream I guess  ;D

believe it or not the hardest part of that cut is the large table facet and polishing it is  :o

Paul,
About to start faceting?  Do you think you should be doing that with your bad back?  Think of the strain that you'll put on your back when you throw an erroneously faceted stone across the room!   ;D

BTW - the Stannifer jellybeans are great material for learning on.

Regards,
Shane

Put me down for a copy of your design book Deb  :) I prefer first editions. At least with faceting Shane unlike fossicking Paul could sleep in and do it in his P.J.s Hope the backs better Paul. beers Ted

Hi Dancer,
I don't have Gemcad but it's looking like something I'll have to get !  I'm sure some of your special designs would be very popular.

Hi Shane/Ted,
Funny you should mention my back ... it was starting to get better so on Friday I decided to rearrange my room to make space for the Gemmasta and I totally stuffed it again - ended up with an ambulance ride - I can highly recommend the puffer thing they give you - need to get a 6 pack of those !  I always said that I would start facetting when I couldn't fossick any more .... so I think 2009 is going to be the year for cutting .... well and maybe a bit of "light digging"  ;D

Regards, Paul

Gee Wizz Ted, Maybe I better work on a book then.

I hope your back gets better soon, I was a bit achy after moving my gemmasta also, am still yet to give it a spin though  ;D

Paul,
So faceting IS a high risk hobby?  :o   I hope you stop throwing the furniture around for long enough for your back to heal.

All the best!

Regards,
Shane

Hey Shane,
You know the other coincidence ... it looks like it might be my facet joints causing all the problems  :)
