are there any age restrictions for the field trips for kids?  we loved our visit to Emmaville last school holidays to the museum and my young fella is keen as to get back there.  Probably keener than I am to stay in a tent that time of the year down there.  No public holiday in QLD but we'd probably try and get down for the Sunday & Monday trips.

Quite a bit of water - Reddestone Creek and Beardy Waters.  That area along the Reddestone has had really good quality sapphire taken out but has been well worked/mined over the years so be realistic about what you are likely to find.  Good redfin in the bigger holes if you like fishing - really good eating and feral so no bag limit.

G'day Bak  beers

No age restrictions as we have had couples with babies at Minerama this year. Should be plenty of camping area here as I am putting 2 acres approx for self contained camping depending how many tailgaters I get. I will have fire pits around the food / entertainment area with plenty of wood in them.

G'day Starsapphire,  beers

Had some friends stay at 3 Waters recently & they did very well. Small but plenty of colour. Reddestone Ck runs through it & its a big area so plenty of room. From the interest shown so far, it looks like it will be very well attended. Tickets will be sold on the day as I am not using online bookings.

Cheers,
Bob  beers

After the twin towers, September 11 disaster insurance everywhere went through the roof. With public liability insurance required to set up a stall at a show insurance went up to hundreds of dollars. What is the present state of play with regard to insurance for stalls at shows?
Title: Re: GEMORAMA
Post by: Lord_Thunda on May 17, 2018, 06:22:01 PM
Hi Harry Opal  beers

I am getting insurance to cover fossickers & everyone who comes to my property. Obviously, tailgaters have their own insurance, as it is a requirement for all gem shows these days. We will be asking ALL fossickers to sign the indemnity forms regardless of age. They are written in "lawyer speak" & plain language so everyone will understand. It is a great pity that insurance is needed these days as "common sense" seems to be a lost trait.  :'(

The reason for choosing the NSW Queens Birthday weekend was to have it in the off season & mid way between Minerama & Gemfest. There was only one other gem show on that weekend so not much competition. If you run field trips where people can find gemstones & minerals, then regardless of the weather, they will support it. From the responses on the FB page, it already looks like it will be a huge success. The first post garnered 1406 responses in the 6 months it has been posted.  :o  Running it so that all profits go to charity is my way of giving back to those who have helped me in the past as well as an organisation that helps homeless veterans.

accommodation booked and can't wait for the weekend.  Just me and the young fella heading down.  Mostly coming for the field trips since there's not much to dig around north Brisbane although 8yr old has been counting his pocket money to buy something from the stalls.  This will be our first time heading out as part of an organised field trip so anything in particular we need.  we have a sieve set, a pick and shovel.
cheers Brett

G'day Brett  beers

There should be plenty of tailgaters coming so a wide variety of stuff to buy. Numbers I have no clue on how many will turn up but the FB page has had 1500 + views this week  :o  I have a local couple doing brekky all days & lunch on possibly 2 days.

The silver mine is mainly specking so maybe just a small pick & hammer & a strong back to carry specimens up the hill to the road. 3 waters has an area thats varying in the degree as to how much work you want to put in. Some of it has lots of rocks to move & there is a patch of overburdon but some good stones have been found there. Its all dry digging but the river is very close. Pick & shovel to get to the wash then sieves. The mystery trip has 2 sites which will be specking & digging tho seives can be used if desired.

Everything is coming together very nicely & it will be a great weekend. I have 2 old water tanks full of wood for fires & heaps of food organised.

Look forward to meeting you & your son.

Cheers,
Bob  beers

Gemorama is done & dusted for this year. Lots of lessons learned that are easily fixed next year.

Disappointing turnout but the feedback I have seen & heard was positive. Many people were disappointed they didnt go so numbers will improve. I guess Minerama had the same result in their initial year.

Lots of pics up now on here & the FB page.

Definitely!

For example I couldn't make it because of my sisters wedding - hopefully that won't be happening again next year!!   ;D

I've got a few ideas too we'll chat about but, as you said, next year most of the organisation is pretty set up so you'll need less time and be more focused on key things.

I have a few tricks in place to overcome financial problems which will be revealed when trips are confirmed.

I know many people were disappointed they couldnt go this year due to the awesome finds others had. I'm already thinking of trips & have a few in mind  ;)

Bob, I am home and recovered from the trip.

Had a great time as well as a chance to meet some more fellow fossickers and a chance to put faces to fellow ALFers.  ;D
A fair few nice tourmaline specimens that I scratched up are still sitting up at Gadens for people to pick up next time.  I even found a 10 cent size piece of fluorite there.  Finds by others included quartz crystals with tourmaline inside, a citrine and a nice smoky point.
Some nice sapphires including dog tooths were found on the Sunday trip by lucky fossickers.

Next year should be even better so do not miss it.  beers

We did have lovely weather for the weekend. Days were sunny & about low 20's, nights had some showers on the Sat nite but the fire pit worked perfectly under the carport. Mornings were brisk but bearable & it warmed up fairly quickly. As most of you know, the intensity of the sun up here takes the unwary by surprise so sunburn can happen when least expected.

Got a few ideas for next year but have been busy here lately & with the lovely rain we had for the past 2 days was impossible to get out & research my new sites. Hope to have them nailed down in the next month or 2 at most. My plan is to have everything in place by Christmas so I can relax & just iron out the small details. Hope to see more of you up here next June.  ;D

When was the last time you bought a bag of wash Gemster!!?? :-D

As it happens just had a few days at 3 waters with the kids and another family.  Found a few nice sapphires in the creek, did a spin up to the old emerald mine at Torrington (only had about 20 minutes before major storm rolled in), and a wander over to Elsmore.  So feeling a lot better now!!

Hi Malachi,

We got lots of little pieces but by digging some dirt in a particular spot to take away and then put it through our sieves.  I did this the time before and was surprised by how many pieces we got so did it again.  Surface is specked over very regularly!

Having said that everything found was only small pieces not cuttable as all broken when the area was graded out.  But more than enough for the kids and our friends and their kids to be very happy!

Really well!  Checkout the Gemorama facebook page.  Some really lovely specimens found and hopefully more pics going up.  Lord T can fill you in more.

Very sad I couldn't get there either! :(

G'day Slippery,  beers

The weekend went off great thank you. We are already starting on next years trips so get the calendar marked  ;)  6 - 8th June 2020.

I didnt hear a bad comment from anyone that attended. In fact, almost every fossicker said they would be back next year.  :o

There was a stunning amount of quality mineral specimens found including galena, azurite, cerussite, malachite, copper, quartz & fluorite. Who knows what will be found next year but this site will be re-used again as everyone wanted to return.

The trip to Wellingrove Ck produces some small sapphires & zircons but not really in great numbers or quality. The scenery there is breathtaking & the drive challenging but everyone enjoyed themselves again.

Mondays trip was moved to Tingha due to the drought up here. Quite a haul of quartz points were found by everyone.

Dinners on Sat & Sun night were a huge success. Contrary to comments by those who said it'd be too cold  ::)  the fire pits kept the chill off & there was even impromptu fire & light stick twirling by a few ladies & gents.

Numbers were double from last year & the dealer that attended, Hoy Gold Sluices, had a great time & a few sales. I'm hoping other dealers will come next year as fossickers are always hungry for good deals. Bringing people in the off- season can only benefit the towns & villages to the area. I look forward to seeing more ALFers there next year.

Cheers,
Bob  beers
