Gems in Tassie
« on: March 11, 2016, 06:54:04 AM »
A mate of mine is moving from Adelaide to Georgetown and has asked if there are any fossicking opportunities in Tassie. I told him there are sapphires at Weld river, topaz on one of the Bass straight islands and quartz crystals at Gladstone.

Does anyone have any more/more in depth info I could pass on to him?

Cheers

Hi Lefty,
Plenty of rivers/creeks, He should just get out there and have a look as the best spots are the ones you find yourself. Any of the areas where tin has been mined are worth a look.
Here a link to the public fossicking areas
http://www.mrt.tas.gov.au/portal/fossicking-areas
MRT webpage is also great place to do some research.

Cheers
Andrew

Lefty, that north eastern area is great, as Makkybrown has mentioned. There are also topaz to be had in the general area south of Gladstone. Further afield are the agate/fern areas down south and some nice jaspers around Penguin on the north west coast. The MRT site is full of info and like Makkybrown said, anywhere they mined tin is always worth a look.

If he chases sapphires in the Weld he will need a pair of teeny weeny tweezers.

A pair of bib and brace waders would be handy too (even in summer)http://aussielapidaryforum.com/forum/Smileys/classic/cold.gif

Don’t bother with the weld for those teeny sapphires, the place has been absolutely flogged and sooooo much rubbish has been left behind. A beautiful area has been ruined

I don't know where you go but I have not seen any rubbish left behind by any fossickers, if I do I will pick it up and dispose of it.  The Black Rivulet area and those others locally are pristine from what I see.
