Notching
« on: December 08, 2011, 01:49:52 PM »
Mr T (son, thanks for the nickname Deb) is setting some of his cut stones. He now realizes that he needs to notch some findings. We had never heard of notching before. Can anyone advise on ways to do this. Someone said a dremel is good. Thanks

A needle file might be the better choice to start with, more control. A seat needs to be cut in  to support the gem at the girdle.
Keep em comin!!!

This information here might be useful:

Easier to buy settings that are pre-notched but you do have less control over the process in case the gems and notches dont quite suit each other.

Settings from APECS and the like can be ordered plain or pre-notched - ie. finished to whatever degree you want - just need to specify what you need when you order.

The settings we stock are pre-notched because many of our customers are not set up to do this extra finishing step on a casting and just want to set a stone they have cut or purchased quickly and easily.

Thanks for the tips. I have passed the info onto Mr T. I had a look at the site you recommended Leah and I reckon I will stick with going 35ft underground with my jack hammer and leaving Mr T with the cutting and stuff :) Each to their own is so true.
