Tool Idea - Crevice Scoop
« on: September 12, 2010, 05:10:41 PM »
Hi,
I was thinking ahead to my October trip to Glen Innes and there's a tool that I reckon would be really useful - a crevice scoop.

This is intended for deep narrow crevices where yabby pumps can't get in (like Yarrow Creek!).  In my imaginitis it comprises a rake handle or some reo about 1.5 metres long, with a small mesh scoop on the end - not much wider than the handle itself, but around 20cm long.

Has anybody ever made one of these or similar?

Regards,
Shane

Could try getting an old skinny garden trowel hitting it with the hammer to make it the right shape (bend the tip back on it's self to make a small scoop) and then getting a longer handle for it...?     Make sure it's a good solid metal though...

Just a thought?    ;D

Hi Shane,
I agree it's an excellent idea.  I tried to make one just like the Capt'n says .... it's a bit dodgy though because I don't have a welder to glue it to the long handle.  I have just bought an adjustable length handle with a "clip on" trowel (and other implements) ... not sure if it's strong enough to handle the conditions but I thought it was worth a shot.  It looks neat :D
Regards, Paul

How about one of those golf ball retrieval gadgets, the things they use for snigging golf balls out of the water. I think they have a telescopic handle.

Just another thought.

Problem in some sapphire areas is the virgin dirt/wash is so tightly packed in the crevice that it's near on impossible to get out; bar using a cow bar and moving/splitting rock...

If if the crevice is to tightly packed use a long thin metal prod to loosen it then in with the scoop.  ;D

That is needed as a scoop is one that is half the width a trenching shovel
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

I went to the op shop and bought kitchen utensils. You know the things used to get the vegies out of boilng water, bent them to shape in various sizes, cost less than a dollar for three. A as probe I use a length of steel rod , sharpened at one end, bored a hole in piece of broomstick & stuck it on the other end, also can be used to get parner moving (if your game.)
