Info on Batt Lap

I recently scored a second-hand Batt Lap as shown in the pictures, I thought Batt Laps were all a solid tin alloy but this one has a 2.3mm coating of a dark grey composite material on top of the aluminium backing plate. When would this have been produced, and do you use this lap any differently to a solid tin alloy Batt Lap?

It looks like a Darkside Lap.  Jon (Gearloose) Rolfe makes both.  It is pollible it has been mislabled


The Darkside is a ceramic lap good for a wide range of hardnesses.  Magic with oxides as well as quite good for use with Diamond.

Use microscopic amounts of polishing compoind.

I apply 2 squirts of diamond to a facewipe, then a few drops of extender to the facewipe and waive it over the surface of the spinning lap, actually I use the facewipe to clean the lap, this transfer s a  invisible amount of polish to the lap, that is sufficient.

If using Bat Stick, draw a ring near the centre of the lap and slow drip water  on it, what flushes over the lap is enough to polish with.  Periodically renew line.

Mislabeled, that would make sense then - I have a more recent Darkside with a bonded polycarbonate/perspex backing plate that I use successfully with quartz and messy cerium slurry. I must try a BattStik, sounds much more civilised.

That's a really old label, could be even from the 90's before the Darkside even existed.  I swear we only drink here after 4 PM, and only in the Summer when the pool is open.  That's a Darkside.  Those BATT labels are from way back when we had them hot-stamp printed.  Things aren't THAT bad here that we have to use outdated wrong labels. Probably never figure it out.

It might become a collectable, lol, a bit like those rare wrongly-stamped minted coins.
The lap works fine but has seen a bit of use so has concentric high and low spots on it. Is it possible to lap it on a piece of glass or flat surface? Hardly worth doing probably, but if there is a straightforward method I might give it a try,

Lapping it on wet and drt on a glass surface works fine and is faster than lapping a metal lap.
