Creswick. Gems and gold
« on: June 22, 2020, 10:59:53 PM »
Heading to Creswick area on the weekend.
Can anyone suggest some good spots for both gold and gems. We will head to Slaty creek campgrounds which we have never been to and also sailors creek which we are familiar with. Anything else worth looking at.

We will be panning, sluicing and detecting.

Welcome to ALF.
Apparently you can get sapphires in Sailors Creek. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a bit of Gold around Creswick and Daylesford. The occasional gemstone turned up all over the goldfields so keep your eyes open when you are panning.

I suggest Gemstones in Victoria by William Burch and Dermot Henry, published by Museums Victoria a great book.

Yes I bought that book about 2 weeks ago and had a really good read of it. It has got me excited. I have found saphires and zircon at Sailors creek and wondered if it's pretty much the same as slaty creek.

 Hi Everyone.
I haven't posted before but I have been following with interest.

Another book which I found very good is Gem Minerals of Victoria, Special Publication No.4 of
The Mineralogical Society of Victoria published in conjunction with The Royal Society of Victoria.
