Where to buy facet rough gemstones?
« on: July 10, 2014, 05:17:57 PM »
Hey guys and girls,

I'm new to the site and to the gem world and I'm wondering where the best places to buy rough facet gemstones are. What are some reliable online sites as well as in person. I live near Melbourne in Victoria.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers,
Ben

Hi Ben,

Local gem shows, see the calendar link on this site would be a great place to start. Also crystal world which is east of Melbourne would be able to provide heaps of good advice. Most of the Aussie based sellers on eBay who are regular sellers of gemstone rough are fairly reliable.

Depending on what you want a few on this site sell as well.

Hi nebben838, welcome to the forum.  I agree fully with southerly, the gem shows should be your first stop and if you check the calendar on the right, they are usually listed when they're coming up.  /Your second alternative would be to join one of your local clubs and find your own, a very rewarding pastime. Finally, there is at least one shop I know of in the suburbs there that sells quality facet rough, I'm pretty sure there's a couple of others as well, including Crystal World.  This can be more expensive than the other two options, but the range is usually very good.
Common sense isn't exactly common

:) Hi, I will be able to help you with some very special stones, I am cataloging a close facetor friends lifetime collection of facet rough, he passed away recently and his wife has asked me with the bag and tag job along with family members, we will be finished in the next few weeks and the stones will be up for sale at reasonable prices, we live in Gippsland.   There is an amazing quality collection to be sold, when we are ready I will put a post up.

Hi Ben,

I usually do the gem shows from Armidale NSW up to Hervey Bay QLD but if you're a bit further afield you can see some of my rough on http://www.gemwerx.com.  Not everything is up yet so if you have something in mind PM me and I'll see if I can help.

Regards
Taz

Thanks Ben, nice work you're doing.  Looking forward to seeing the results with the garnet and morganite.
