Hi,
I thought it would be fun to have a guessing competition each month to give some lucky ALFer a chance to win "Gem of the Month" :D Now I'm fairly sure I haven't thought this completely through cos I don't know what I'm going to do when it's time to give away some Diamonds ... might have to get creative ?
It's easy to win ... all you have to do is reply with the closest correct guess of the combined weight (in carats) of the Topaz in the picture. The competition will end at midnight on Nov 30th and then I will annouce the winner. You then PM your mailing address to me & I'll send you the gems! If there's a tie then I'll split up the prize.
The gems are from Mt Surprise and they should all cut a good stone.
Tip: The combined weight is between 100 and 200 carats.
Good luck beers

-
hey you lot - stop infringing on my turf!!!! When I said 186 carats, I meant "as well as the numbers nearby too". So, you johnny-come-latelys with your 185s and 187s and so on can all bow to my chronological perspicacity! ;D
-
109 carats I reckon ;) Crab
-
LOL Calx feeling the squeeze? :-*
-
Had to reach for the dictionary ... not something you are supposed to do on an internet forum ::)
perspicacity!
= acuteness of perception, discernment, or
understanding.
Ok, if you say so ... although you aint got much choice have you ... no where to move now wedged in there at 186.
I'm gonna go and weigh some of my Mt Surprise stones ... not sure that it'll help though.
-
You can use decimal places if you want ... I'll weigh them to the nearest tenth of a carat. Also, if you want to change your guess then you can by mod'ing your first post or posting again. I'll take your latest guess.
-
Stab in the dark = 163.2 cts. Hope my stab works ... LOVE TOPAZ!!! Jamo ;)
-
guess from nz 147.5crts thats kiwi crts woofa we wont go there eh
-
That is very generous of you Paul. It has certainly got the forum going on this topic. My guess, 167.7

Hi Kiwi Pete,
Is that NZ carats or Aussie carats ? ;)
-
ile guess 132cts
-
If there's a tie then I'll split up the prize.
Tip: The combined weight is between 100 and 200 carats.
was just thinking there was not enough stones in the picture, given that we have over 900 members and only 100 options. If the guessing is even across the range we will have over 9 winners so who gets the five cent peice and the table i'm wondering?
-
Good point TG .... good time to start using decimal places ... then we have 1000 options !
-
hi Kiwi, introduce yourself in the intro section, long white cloud. Hmmm, so another Jade carver maybe? :D

Last day to put in your guess beers
-
150 ct
-
it's all so exciting!
-
Good afternoon all,
And thank you, you can begin sending in your congratulations now.
I sell Tibetan turquoise by the gram and any time someone wants a stone I first of all hazard a guess. What a marvellous instrument is the brain. ( I don't mean mine) But with practice I can usually get within a few tenths of a gramme.
Now, I could hold the topaz in the palm of my hand I would feel better but anyway, I am pushing for 186.7.
Yours tropically, Harry
-
Hmmm, nearly forgot to have a go .... I'll go with 169. It's not that I think this is necessarily correct, I just looked for a reasonable gap in the numbers put forward so far.
Cheers,
Fullerton
-
The competition will end at midnight on Nov 30th and then I will annouce the winner.
Are you announcing the winner at midnight? I'm a bit of a night owl and will probably be awake anyway.

Congrats Mehoose - the result of years of experience, a well trained eye and a fair bit of luck, I suppose!
Wrong thread, I know, but it's pretty cool up here in Glen Innes today, around 13 degrees the last time I looked. We were going out to Rainy Swamp but the people who said they were coming didn't show (can't say I blame them) and I chickened out.
-
178.8 carats Jer.
thanks Barrett, keep your eyes open for the next one 8)
LOL Findem, sounds good but a bit of guesstimates. First tally was WAAAAY too high so compromised.
Well, can't say I blame you for chickening out, we had snow overnight. brrr

Cheers mick B :)
-
Yeah, well done Mehoose & thanks Woofa for your generosity! :D
-
Well done Mehoose!!! :D
Got any thoughts what jewellery you might make for the stones?
-
Thanks mick, Jamo n Capt. :-*
LOL, no idea Capt. but a couple of stones as big as I can make em without killing em... harrrrrrrrr.
-
Apparently everyone who cuts has to make at least one faceted door knob in their life time.... Ironically it might take a life time to cut....!!! :D
-
Yes I've seen some big knobs.
I have posed the question before elsewhere about how big one can go comfortably on particular sized laps (6 & 8")but no one seems able to handle the question.
Have seen those super sized polished crystals which do require specially made laps but was looking at the normal facet machine sizes.
The longest facet I've cut so far has been 3 cm on a 6".
-
Congrats. to Mehoose for the win, and I thank you for the consideration of including us [Carol and I] in the contest. We don't facet, or do gemmy sorts of things, primarily quartz mtls. being our long suit, but we have enjoyed greatly following this contest thru; fun. I have been asked to post some of our project things, and will as soon as I can figure out a workable light box so as to get rid of the bright spot.
-
Thanks llarson. Keep your eyes open, you just never know there might be something you're interested in.
