Title: Naming Jasper?
Post by: 1971sharyn on May 27, 2013, 07:09:30 AM
Finally found a replacement for my "Rainforest Jasper" and I want to call it "Little Jem" for obvious reasons, can I do this or do I have to be technical?  How do I know if this stuff has already been named?
The rock I found is hugeish and is pretty much solid agate except for some purple druzy, there are no fractures and only some minor pitting but the different patterns with each cut are gorgeous.
Father-in-law hit it with the slasher, hence the offcut for me to slab  :)

(Jasonr it's the one you saw at the front of shed with the sparkling druzy)

If selling it, you should provide the most accurate technical description including appropriate naming.

However, if this is done, I don't see a problem with you giving it a localised name as well so long as the buyer knows this if what you've done.

This potentially becomes your trade name for the material and it works best when you have a constant supply of similar material. The Americans do it all the time with their agates and jaspers.

You shouldn't use the local name alone though as buyers still need to know what they are getting.

Haha Fullerton..that's where you come in  ;)
So what is it then "Agatized Brecciated Jasper"? what is the spelling for Agatized?
Going to get some artificial intelligence later this week, so hopefully there won't be too many more dumb questions LOL  ;D

No, I'll let the agate and jasper experts give you some pointers on the best descripters to use. Even though Toppster tries to indoctrinate me, I don't usually have much to do with agates and I only really know my local jasper materials well.

Be careful not to chop and change with names too much ... might come across too much of a 'cowboy' seller and I wouldn't create a name for something I only had a few samples of.

My only pointer is to consider reflecting the locality/provenance in some way. For example, I named one of the materials I sell 'Victoria River Volcanics' as it is from the Victoria River District of the Northern Territory and it has volcanic origins. I have enough for ongoing (but limited) supply, I am the only person who knows the site it comes from and I have never seen anything else like it on the market. That, to me, gives me naming rights as least for general sales  :)
