Title: My new blog and You Tube channel information
Post by: Findem on June 01, 2013, 09:25:22 PM
Hi everyone - I've commenced my new blog called "John's New England Minerals Blog". I know it's a rather presumptuous thing to do, but I hope it will inform and entertain you. Apart from the first introductory blog, I've now added another, on pink sapphires found in the Glen Innes district.

You can find it at johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au (http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au)

From here you can also link to my You Tube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/celticjohn1?view_as=public  (http://www.youtube.com/user/celticjohn1?view_as=public)
Why not subscribe so you can keep up to date with what's new.

Happy viewing!

Looking forward to reading more of your blogs John. This is a great idea & gives us all more insight into the numerous gems available in the general area. Now to find a pink sapphire. ;)

I'd appreciate a bit of feedback about the readability of the blog (layout, colours, language etc) so I can improve on it as pages are added. Thank you.
It's been interesting for me to see where the page views are coming from. Most are from Oz, of course, but this morning there were several from Russia and France. The You Tube views are even more widespread, including from Albania and Venezuela!

You have kept the layout of your blog clear and simple which is good. :)

Are there going to be separate pages in the blog for different topics?

At the moment the newest entry is at the top and you have to scroll down a far way to find the first

Are there going to be separate pages in the blog for different topics?

It has been a long time since I used wordpress.com as we moved our blog to a hosted Wordpress one but as far as I remember, it can handle static pages.

Probably also cool things like tag clouds and categories would help to find stuff as John gets more info on there. Which I am sure we are all encouraging him to do :-)

We should also link to it from our ALF links page.

cheers

Thanks for all the helpful comments, friends. I haven't yet figured out how to list the entries so as not to get the entire contents in one long article.
I've just added a new entry (and a corresponding You Tube video) on the Baker's Hill - Glen Eden mines near Dundee, north of Glen Innes.
There's one more thing readers can help me with. Google is supposed to pay me for any ad clicks on ads on the blog and the videos. I'm not allowed to click on them myself (they say I could be banned if I do), so unless someone actually does click on an ad I can't tell if they are actually paying me. This is not an attempt to get you all to click on ads so I get some cash! I just need to know if the system is working OK.
Thanks to you.

Could not find any ads to click on??  I think you are supposed to put some Adsense code in somewhere to get them to show - could not seen them when viewing in Chrome just now.

Re the long layout - this is inherent in the blog style of website but would definitely encourage you to look at using pages and categories to organise the info.

Some of the features of Wordpress are locked down a bit on the Wordpress.com version as it is a shared service but the self-hosted version of Wordpress can be tweaked any which way to look however you want. It can be made to behave much like a standard website and not really like a blog at all. This can be handy for information based websites compared to just telling people what is going on (like a travel journal for instance).

cheers

Thanks for the feedback, Leah. There are always ads there when I look at the blog - one or more on the right hand side and another under the most recent entry. What's more, they are clearly targetting our sort of audience.
As for ads on You Tube, I'll need to check again.
Title: Re: My new blog and You Tube channel information

No ads when I checked either...maybe one needs to log in first to get the full view?

Ads still not there for me either - whether logged in or not. So something a bit odd happening.

Thanks again to both of you. I'm viewing with Firefox, but the Analytics provided list at least half a dozen other platforms that viewers are using, including Chrome.
I guess I'll spend a few more hours working on this issue yet.

Hey John, I find it a little difficult to post a comment unless I logged in to an account... There were a few choices of what to log in to, a little annoying if you wanted to add a quick comment, or you had no account of wordpresses choices...  :/

I don't get that one either. My view just show a place for comments, but I haven't tried adding any. I guess I should just to see what happens.
Also, $2.35 has appeared in the earnings analysis this afternoon, so someone's able to see ads and click on them. Thank you!

An ad showed up when I viewed in Internet Explorer but not Firefox or Chrome. Didnt try the comments.

Just as a data point, google analytics for the last month on our own website showed about 33% visits from IE, Chrome next (just over 20%) and then a variety of others.

Firefox 71 (39%)
Internet Explorer 56 (30%)
Chrome 37 (20%)
Safari 8 (4%)
Mobile Safari 6 (3%)
OS;FBSV 3 (1%)
UniversalFeedParser 1 (<1%)
This is the break down of browsers employed to access the site.
Would whoever clicked on an ad please let me know what the ad was and what browser you were using? Send me a PM if you think this is too private to reveal to the world!

The various entries now appear on the right hand side, though you need to click on "May" to get the first one. Otherwise, each appears as expected when you click on it.
A Comment box is there and I entered a comment. It now appears below the first blog ie, the introductory one from May. What's more, an email just arrived telling me that there was a comment on my blog (from me, of course).
This is fun. An ideal way to fill in a winter evening.  :D

Hello everyone. I've put up 2 more blog entries this week: "Torrington - Essential Reading", which gives you some useful DIGS references, and "Pretty Valley Gold".

I believe I've found the answer to the "Comments" issue. If you click on the blog entry over on the right rather than scrolling down to find it, then it opens complete with a Comments space. This goes for the most recent entry too, at least this is how it works for me.

More blog entries for your information.
"Peridot from Glen Innes", "Quartz at Down the Hill Yarrow Creek" and "Heffernan's Wolfram Mine Torrington".
I've continued attempts to improve the general appearance of the entries, but it's difficult when you get it all looking good only to find that when it's "open to the public", so to speak, some fonts and font sizes have changed, sentences have overflowed and you have to search for the rest of it, captions have shifted etc.
When it's perfect I'll let you know. As we are moving on Thursday, perfection may take a little while to come.

For those who like pretty pictures, I've put up a blog entry on the Old Mine area at Yarrow Creek. Makes me quite nostalgic. As you will see, it was only 4 or 5 years ago, so I'm sure there are many good finds to come (for you younguns, that is).  ;).

Just in case you think I'm loafing down here, I found my first ever cartwheel penny last Friday. For those who don't know, that's a 1797 minted coin, so there's some history attached to it. See http://forum.kimbucktwo.com/index.php/topic,19741.0.html (http://forum.kimbucktwo.com/index.php/topic,19741.0.html) .

Hi John,
Another great blog ... the old mine site is my favourite Yarrow Creek site.  I've had some of my best fossicking days there :D  I found a 1966 2c coin there buried deep under a boulder so I guess mining was still going on then?

Here's a pic of two garnets from there that I got cut ....

[smg id=635 type=preview align=center width=400 caption="Yarrow Garnets"]

The Cartwheel penny is a great find !

Probably. But they were still circulating into the 90's and I know there was no mining going on there then.  :)

Hello everyone. I've just commenced a second blog called "John's Blue Mountains Blog" (johnsbluemountainsblog.blogspot.com. (http://johnsbluemountainsblog.blogspot.com.) . So far, I've only done an introduction. For a while there isn't going to be much of geological or mineralogical interest, but that will come.
There'll be more You Tube videos as well on the same subjects and they'll appear as a new playlist in my channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/celticjohn1 (http://www.youtube.com/user/celticjohn1) .
Also, there's a new entry in the New England Minerals blog on Scrubby Gully at Torrington. I'd welcome suggestions for more blog entries as obviously I'm going to run out shortly since I'm not on the spot any more.

There are now 2 more videos in my You Tube channel, in a playlist on the Blue Mountains. They are on the Pulpit Rock lookouts at Blackheath and the Katoomba Cascades at Katoomba. The Blue Mountains blog has corresponding entries.
Also, the New England minerals blog has another entry, on Yarrow Creek minerals.
Particularly with the Blue Mountains material, I'd appreciate it if any of you can refer people to these sites, as I don't have a forum of happy people like you to tell when there's something new to read or view.
Thank you

It's been a while since I mentioned additions to my Blogs and You Tube videos. Actually, there have been quite a few, which keeps me busy on these colder days. We had a little (very little) snow here last night for the first time since we moved at the end of June. I know there have been some new members joining the Forum of late. That's great to see. Here are the various links and how many entries there are for each so far.

johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au  26 entries
http://johnsbluemountainsblog.blogspot.com.au (http://johnsbluemountainsblog.blogspot.com.au) 8 entries
http://www.youtube.com/user/celticjohn1 (http://www.youtube.com/user/celticjohn1) 29 videos

Happy reading and watching!

Today I posted my first purely geological entry in the Blue Mountains Blog. It's called "Unconformity at South Bowenfels near Lithgow New South Wales Australia". Although I don't say so in the blog, the excavation showing this feature is about 100 metres from where Sue and I are now living.
Some statistics: Today the total views of my YouTube videos passed 6,000. The page views of the New England Minerals blog reached 2,000 and the Blue Mountains blog 400. Thank you to all who are viewing and reading. I'd like to see more Blue Mountains readers and viewers, so if you know someone who might be interested, please let them know.

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I put up a new entry in my New England Minerals blog. There have been a few specimens I wanted to photograph but I guess I've sold them. Tonight I went ahead and did "The Bottom End", about the section of Yarrow Creek just above the boundary fence of the property. It includes one of my favourite photos at the end, a reminder of a great day's fossicking in March 2010.
You can find it at johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au (http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au) .

My You Tube channel  is at http://www.youtube.com/user/celticjohn1 (http://www.youtube.com/user/celticjohn1) . I'm continuing to put up new Blue Mountains videos and blogs most weeks as well.
Happy viewing and reading.

Thanks to both of you ,we have read both blogs and have found them to be very informative and enjoyable
We  are new to fossicking and have been inspired by reading about your jaunts and finds
So much so we have been for many trips to the new England area over the past 6months ( the bug has bitten )
We have enjoyed camping at blatherarm and have found some nice topaz etc we have also tried a few creeks throughout the new England area looking for sapphires with mixed success
Keep up the good work we look forward to reading about your past and future exploits
We also look forward to more trips of our own
Thx Amanda and Chris

Hello all.
I've been planning to do this for some time, so now that all is well again with my computer, here goes.
I've added a new video to my playlist: it's titled The Pretty Valley Gemstone Deposits" http://youtu.be/yKRmkuzRVFk (http://youtu.be/yKRmkuzRVFk). It's basically a slide show of our finds at Pretty Valley, near Glen Innes. Some of the pics have already appeared in my various videos and blogs but most have not. I'll be doing the same thing for nine other locations Sue and I regularly visited on our Wednesday Baptist Church Fossicking Group trips.
Hope this causes you all to lust after the lovely gems of the Glen Innes district.

Ive just added a blog entry on Webb's Silver Mine near Emmaville. Those going to Gemfest this year may not to get to visit this spot, but at least you can read about it. http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au/2014/09/webbs-silver-mine-near-emmaville-nsw_7.html (http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au/2014/09/webbs-silver-mine-near-emmaville-nsw_7.html)
For those who may not have noticed yet, I've added another slide show to my You Tube playlist, this time on "Down the Hill" Yarrow Creek. You can get there from the blog by clicking on the "List of all Blog entries" at the top of any blog. Using the search box at the top of each page should easily get you there as well.
Please note Wwoofa: I've copied two photos from the Media Gallery to illustrate the Blog. I hope that's OK. Google Images led me to them! To compensate, you appear in the new slide show.

Another Blog entry today - The Ottery Mine at Tent Hill near Emmaville. This is one of those rare sites with plenty of information there to help you understand what went on.
I'm also continuing to add to my new slide show series. These are intended to concentrate on what has been found at each place so they are brief (1-3 minutes). You can go from each video to the next by clicking on the link near the end.

Since my last entry in this thread I've added several more blogs and slide shows. They're all listed in the "Blog Entries" listing which should open when you go to the blog from the link below.
I hope you all have a great Christmas with many good finds in the year ahead. My goal for the year is to continue to provide you with as much information about New England minerals as I can (not forgetting the Blue Mountains, New Zealand and other Glen Innes stuff as I go along).  beers

Hi everyone. I've put up several more blog entries since I last wrote here; today's one is on the sapphire deposits near Ebor. The link is below.
Fell free to add comments to any of my blogs if you have additional information to share on the subject.

I've put up another blog entry today on the Sapphire Deposits of Back Plain near Glen Innes. Here's the link: http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au/2015/03/sapphire-deposits-at-back-plain-near.html (http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au/2015/03/sapphire-deposits-at-back-plain-near.html)
It would be helpful to other fossickers if there could be some feedback. That's what the comments section is for. For example, I've mentioned a possible fossicking spot in this blog which I visited only once. Tell us what you found when you went there. That's a job for someone visiting Glen Innes for Minerama!
I've noticed something unusual in the statistics for my fossicking videos. Most of the views on some of these are coming from Indonesia. With one in particular (the slide show on the Black Jack Hole, Yarrow Creek) nearly all the views are from that country. What do you think is going on here?
John

Finally had the time to work out how to leave a comment the blog would be happy with. :)

Maybe the Indonesians want to buy the sapphire deposits or as is more likely they are bots.

It's been a while, but I've put up two more blog entries this week - one on the Sara River SE of Glen Innes, the other on Ruby Hill near Bingara.
The link is below. Happy reading - and make sure you follow up the links in each to get the best value.

The bots must have decided not to look at my videos last week. Since then things have recovered a bit. More likely the Indonesians decided to boycott Australian videos for a while.

I've just completed  both a blog and a video on diamonds in the New England region of NSW. There's no video of me fossicking for diamonds, but you do get to see me talking about it (for those who've never met me or want to see how the years are treating me).
Enjoy.

I've just completed a new entry on The Gulf Fluorite Mine. This is a well known mineral collecting locality near Emmaville, which has been visited on several occasions on Minerama and Emmaville Gemfest field trips.

Thanks, Jerry. I enjoy compiling the material, but keeping 2 blogs and 4 You Tube playlists active while at the same time trying not to appear to be obsessed is a bit of a challenge. I should add in metal detecting and leading a Bible study group as well, I guess.  ::)

Thanks for compiling the info, John.  It's very useful and hopefully people going to Emmaville will be inspired to try to find some of those Beryl xls :)   I wish I knew they were there before I went.  Just shows that it's always worthwhile to do your homework.

It seems to take longer every time I prepare another blog entry. Whatever the reason, I've just completed one on Specimen Hill, the Gulf near Emmaville.
Here's the link: http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com/2015/11/specimen-hill-gulf-near-emmaville-nsw.html (http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com/2015/11/specimen-hill-gulf-near-emmaville-nsw.html)
As I explain in the blog, I've never been to this spot and I needed photographs so I've used several from Jewellery Pirate' s blog ( http://jewellerypirate.com.au/blog/emmaville-gemfest-specimen-hill/ (http://jewellerypirate.com.au/blog/emmaville-gemfest-specimen-hill/)) and from the Wild Frontier Crystals site (http://instidy.com/wild_frontier_crystals (http://instidy.com/wild_frontier_crystals)). Many thanks, Gavin and Paul.
As always, comments on the blog would be appreciated, especially anything which adds to the experience of someone visiting Specimen Hill. Make them on the blog, though - not here. There is provision for this at the end of the blog.

The Limestone Caves are really interesting but you have to be careful not to disturb the bats.  Well worth a visit.

And then the Macintyre Falls just a bit further on are a really nice place for picnic/BBQ and a swim.

Great spot.

This is very interesting area for anyone with the time and energy to explore it. Being in the Torrington State Conservation Area it's OK to fossick there, unlike the mines at The Gulf which are on private property.

My latest Blog entry is up tonight. It's on Smith's Mica Lode at Torrington. The link is here http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au/2016/03/smiths-mica-lode-torrington.html (http://johnsnewenglandminerals.blogspot.com.au/2016/03/smiths-mica-lode-torrington.html)
I think it's a bit rough in places, so please suggest ways to improve it. The text looks smaller than usual but it may just be that my eyes are getting older.
I'd love to include a colour photograph or two, so if anyone has one they are prepared to share, let me know. Captain Mendoza - if you read this, perhaps you might take a pic of one of the specimens I left with you.
Smith's and nearby areas look like great places to visit, so if anyone finds their way there and makes some good finds they'd like to tell us about, here would be the place to do it.

Hello everyone!
I've just added a new Blog on the Tourmaline in quartz locality at Wallangra.
Because I have never been there, I included several photos by Wwoofa and earthound, who are Forum members. If there is a problem with this, I'd appreciate them letting me know.
It's come to my attention that some unscrupulous pirates have been copying  my videos and passing them off as their own. One site I came across has copied the entire 300+ playlist.
If you are watching one of my videos and it's not being played on the regular You Tube platform, chances are it's a stolen copy. Some provide links to You Tube which is generally OK.
If the video does not have the correct info at the beginning and does not have the watermark of my face it is probably a pirate copy.
I'd be glad to hear from you if you have any information.
Thanks. John (Findem)

Noted a u tube item on Wellingrove fossicking reserve. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID4-bBcQLEc

Understood that using a pump even to draw water was not allowed there.

Thanks Jerry. The Wellingrove video looks more like exploitation than fossicking. I doubt that the wildlife enjoyed the night either.

WHAT THE F.CK !!!!

Watching that youtube video uploaded by Peter Hancock "Wellingrove Fossick and Spot"

Soooooo pissed off !!!

http://www.resourcesandenergy.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/363544/A-Guide-to-Fossicking-in-New-South-Wales.PDF (http://www.resourcesandenergy.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/363544/A-Guide-to-Fossicking-in-New-South-Wales.PDF)

Clearly states :

"Power-operated equipment cannot be used on land or in waters for surface disturbance, excavation or
processing. Power operated equipment includes mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, battery and
electrical equipment or machinery."

Before you argue its only "moving water from one place to another" like most highbanker users seem to quote all the time when i see them out and about.
Remember its moving water and using that water to PROCESS the material collected.

The clowns in this video clearly have no interest in anything other than themselves. Typical !!@@#!@$ with no regard to the environment or even each other it would seem. Eg Toddler riding in the trailer "3.49 youtube video."

These guys are a spot on example of the idiots and their behaviour  that is closing land and other popular fossicking spots one after the other.

Not too mention interfering with and harassing the native wildlife ..

Have left "feedback" for them on the youtube video. And also the email copied in the next comment.

Sent the following email to minres.webcoordinator@industry.nsw.gov.au    (If someone knows a more appropriate address let me know)

"To whom it may concern ….

Please view youtube video titled “20151107 Wellingrove fossick and spot”
url - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID4-bBcQLEc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID4-bBcQLEc)

It clearly shows 3 adult males blatantly breaking the laws governing fossicking in NSW.  (Wellingrove)
You will see petrol powered water pump being used to process what is clearly more than 10kgs of material. Even 30kgs if the laws intent is 10kg PER PERSON.

Around the 3.40 mark the registration details of one of the primary vehicals is clearly visible. Not to mention the safety of the toddler riding in the trailer… maybe that’s an issue for police or child protection. ??

If I have sent this to the wrong place please advise where I should be making the complaint.

If the youtube video has been deleted please let me know as I have made a copy of it.

I do apologise for taking your time on what some may call a minor or trivial matter however as a keen NSW fossicker, we are seeing more and more land being closed off to fossickers because of the actions of people like those in the video.

Kind Regards"

It's been quite a while since I added to my blogs. I'm extending the New England Minerals blog with a series based on my unpublished book "Field Geology of the Shoalhaven District". It's now up to Part 5 dealing with the Kiama district. There's a new series in the Blue Mountains Walks blog based on a 1938 guide map.
The links to both appear below.

I would appreciate your subscriptions to my YouTube channel. You will find a subscription spot at the beginning of every video. Google pays a small amount to its creators, based on ads clicked on. This applies to both blogs and videos, however a minimum of 1000 subscribers is required for YouTube. It has taken me 6 years to get to 750 subscribers. So, please subsccribe!
