Hi Scottyb welcome to ALF.  :)

Best bet for local information would be a lapidary club.
see http://gemlapidarycouncilnsw.org.au/clubs/ (http://gemlapidarycouncilnsw.org.au/clubs/)

Looks like you have one in Bryon. :)

If you fossick in State forests you will need a permit from http://www.forestrycorporation.com.au/visiting/activities/fossicking (http://www.forestrycorporation.com.au/visiting/activities/fossicking)
unless the site is a declared fossicking reserve.

With National Parks in NSW all you can do is look at he rocks but not collect.

In Fossicking Locations on this forum there should be some local info for you as well if you go through the topics.

Hope this info helps.

guess no one won't to give away fossicking sites haha
I can't help Scotty as I'm down in Tassie. But sharing spots it's a hard one, most of us like to help but posting your favorite spot online is a danger imo. Most of us take our fair share(probably less given my luck finding sapphires) but when those digging for a living hit your spot it's game over. A couple of sapphire spots down here in Tas have been completely hammered after they were posted about online, youtube clips etc. Best to share spots via pm with posters you know if you want some left for yourself when you visit your spot again.

I would like to bring to your attention a website I have been creating for just this kind of thing - check it out NSW fossicking spots (http://fossicking.daruthe.com/search.php?LocationAttributeID%5B%5D=-&StateID%5B%5D=1). After a little bit of scrolling and zooming you will find a few spots around the north eastern NSW area.

Hey Scottyb the closest mines to you would be Drake area on Tenterfield road.....lots of old and some newish gold and silver mines. the whole area has several old gold mining sites as well as Euingar (spellcheck please) state forest. just down the road .... lots of creaks to walk up there and big smokey quartz crystals, amethyst crystals bigger than you AND me could carry together....seen one about 1.3m long double termated and took 5 men to get it out...they are there but very hard to find...my mates house brick smokey cluster is one of my favs...Also you have a few old gold mines in the Mullumbimby area....watch out for SNAKES lots of them at Euingar

HEY daruthe went to your site and all I could get up was some google maps with no info...problem or work in progress??? :'( :'(

Had my fair share of Cobra action in the Indian ghats fossIckIng for dIamonds rubIes etc.... one time we shared a swimming hole with one. Already crossed paths with a decent size red belly in drake ...seemed pretty chilled unlike the Aussie Cobra...very grumpy snake indeed

My family lives just out of Goonellabah and McLeans Ridges, as kids we'd check out the gravel washes after a decent flood in the local creeks (we'd also ride the flooded creeks on boogie boards, but that was before the world went mad with safety issues - we knew when the barbed wire fences were coming up). Would usually find all sorts of goodies. Got some nice smokeys from Ewingar in Jan. Tried to find the honey opals on Rocky Creek in Jan but alas took the wrong track - (a track I've riden several times in the past)

The King brown or Tiapan is a very close relative of the Kerala King Cobra. However the King Cora is very chilled unlike our very aggressive Tiapan. The locals in India revere and worship the snakes (strIct catch and release polIcy) and as they are very smart I guess they see little threat unlike the ones here. I did hear many stories of King Cora, how they stand over 2m above you and bite down on your skull piercing it causing instant death, king Cora also spray venom in the eyes causing instant blindness.

Speaking of the dreaded wrigglers. We live next to a creek and our predominant snake is the tiger and yes they can get big. They don't have the worst of the venoms the problem is they multi strike. The king brown is sometimes seen around here , mostly because they have fallen off the timber trucks coming from the Murray river area. I once found a skin on my sons property that was big enough to slide over my hand and up my arm and I've got chubby arms. Had no ambition to meet its owner. Other than that we only have copperheads and red bellied blacks. Just make a lot of heavy footsteps they feel the vibrations and move.  ;D And make sure you have something to wrap over the bite. If you follow the first aid procedure it will be OK (been there done that) The fine print is for direct bite into a vein, that's the bad one.  The venom affects the respiratory system not the blood. It travels in the lymphatic system as most strikes are into tissue not the blood system that's why the bandage system works. So heavy footsteps and remember to take a bandage.  beers beers  PS the brown found in the Diamontina River area is our top of the list but he is shy.

I was walking out our guest house in the morning and a King was coming out of the rubbish shed (yes a shed full of rubbish) thick as my wrist and as usual the fumbling for the camera on my phone had the photo mode up first trying to get video happening, and i had inadvertently chased him into a corner. The 6ft raised up and turned on me quick, realizing i was getting too close I backed off and began chasing... but he high tailed it and I got a bit of footage...very cool snake. they have a Cobra temple down the road full of snakes roaming free....(we never had the nuts to go).

Don't like em and never will...bailed up by two tigers when I was a kid in Victoria...scarred me for life :'( :'(

Scottyb found two mines south west of mullum,,,think they are near nightcap np

yankee ck -28.5689 long 153.4407

verhovseks prospect -28.5705 long 153.4407 let me know how you went...

now for the opal three locals.... 2 on private property.. other one on side of Tintenbar to teaven short cut road (Ballina bypass before they built that new one)..about 2kms out of Tintenbar, heading towards teaven is a cutting on the left, before the bridge and turn to teaven... there is an entrance to a house or house estate don't know whats up there but you cant miss it plenty of area to park...just dig around in cutting ...other side of road is guard rail... you may see some places others have dug in... never found any but didn't spend enough time. always travelling home from work on gold coast to coffs..  when and if you find some place in water to keep it ..it loves to crack up in air.. look on net or here for Tintenbar Volcanic Opal  pretty to look at no good for jewellery or so im told ...  I think the whole area they dug up for the bypass is very interesting ...  and could be a good place to dig in the left over dump points (piles of rocks and soil) off the bypass...another place to try is ST Helena bypass works.. just up the road from you...... beers beers

That was a generic Lyme bite Gemster. I have had the misfortune of having a few of thnose before....what are the tunnels you talk of Scottyb?

I think wading in creeks looking and touching rocks/minerals is one of the most relaxing grounding things to de stress...

There was also an article on Catalyst recently about ticks potentially causing an allergy (life-threatening anaphylactic allergy) to red meat.  Had some good stuff about how to safely remove ticks.

I had several bites that went  bullseye and very hard and festy...eww. I never bothered getting diagnosed with Lyme and who knows as it mimics so many other disorders. I have a natural remidy for Lyme that kicks it.

Mushy India has soo many spun out crazy fire sleepers, snake, rat, self mutilation, sadduhs...one guy I saw roll up hIs penis with a stick and twist the bejesus outta it... :/
