Title: Edi Turquoise Mine
Post by: MALACHI on March 31, 2015, 09:05:49 AM
I'm planning to make a scouting trip to the Edi Turquoise Mine in Victoria sometime after Easter. I have been reading about this place in a Victorian fossicking guide book at my club and I've seen some samples found from this location.  Before I go stumbling around up there, I would appreciate some feedback from anyone that has been there. I particularly would like to know if this place is accessible to the public or is it on private land and what is the terrain like for trekking on for a mix of different age groups from my club.   ???

Malachi, I went there many years ago and it was public land, but I don't recall exactly where I fossicked around. But we used GEMSTONES OF VICTORIA by Derrick Stone as our guide. This is an old book.
I remember having to dig down about 2 feet around the boulders of slate to find the turquoise seams.

Thanks for the feedback Lapis, at least now I know some digging will be required and its public land. I've managed to do some online research and discovered the location of six mine sites in the Black Ranges near Cheshunt and two sets of coordinates for at least two of the mines.  I will be looking forward to seeing what I can find after my return from Horsham.  Just hoping that at least one of the six sites is suitable for a club visit.

Hi MALACHI,

Did you ever get to the turquoise fields at Edi - Cheshunt? if you did, how was the access and what did you find?  I'm thinking of heading that way for a look.

Cheers
Phil.

Hi Oldmate and welcome to the forum.  Sorry to say I haven't been in there properly,  I tried to drop by there after a stay at Eldorado and unfortunately the weather had turned really bad so just I continued past Edi/Cheshunt straight for home. Sadly I haven't had the chance to try again.  I recall that a clubs from south Gippsland  went there. Perhaps there might be a member on this forum who might be able to help or send you a pm.

Cheers
Malachi  ;)

Hi Swirly.  On your question of quartz and Strathbogie. If you're a member of a gem club and perhaps  also a member who prescribes to the VGCA Pointer magazine. You will see organised fieldtrips during the year. There was one listed for Strathbogie last weekend; though this was changed to Whroo and Lake Cooper Quarry. I did attend this and by chance I was told  by George Faderson that there was going to be a trip reorganised  for Strathbogie sometime in October.   Details for George from Goulburn Valley Gem, Mineral & Craft Group can be found in  "Pointer".
Cheers

PS I like your suggestion of an Alf group get together at Edi. Will watch out for it if you do.  :)

Hi Steveo. Tried to do an online search for pics of Turquoise from there Edi/Cheshunt. Only found two pics on the "Mindat" site and to me these were  (botryoidal ) not examples of what I've typically seen. The examples I've seen, was where the Turquoise was in nice thin blue layers amidst the dark slate. Hopefully Swirly will be able to post some typical examples .  :)

I hope the weather is kind.  It is a bit far for me to travel from Brisvegas, although temperatures down your way are a bit more appealing than the 30 degree 98% humidity yesterday.

Hi guys, new to the forum. Did any of you manage to head out that way? We are thinking of taking a look at Easter. I am aware there are 8 sites, but am unable to find exact locations on a map and any advice on the best sites to visit would be greatly appreciated

Turquoise can still be found there but some sites have been well picked over. The best site was literally blown up about 25 years ago and little remains. Of the 8 known sites, 2 are on private property, one is blown up, and 5 are on public land. Also turquoise found at Greta South but this is private land and the landowner won't give access. Might be worth a look in the forest outside the property boundary though. Just check first because I am fairly sure the land is all under an Exploration Licence at the present time.
