I'll be up at Newcastle over the coming week. Is anyone away of fossicking locations within a couple of hours of Newcastle? Thanks

Jerrys Plains...Hunter River . There is a bridge approx. 10kms Denman side of Jerrys Plains where you can find petrified wood and chalcedony.Just walk around the river banks wherever there is football sized goolies.

Thanks Richo, Just back and thought I'd show some pics. I actually fossicked here 40 yrs ago when I was a teen. Thought it might have been fossicked out. Fortunately I was wrong. Still some good stuff to be found.

Some nice finds there Jamo . I too have fossicked there for better than 40 years . Whenever a flood or large fresh comes down the river it all gets stirred up again so I doubt it will be fossicked out for some time . Anywhere along the river above Belford where there are football sized rocks will also produce similar results .

Our club used to go and camp on a dairy farm at Jerry's Plains. They used to get great petrified and agatized wood until the farm was sold to a race horse group. access to the river gravels was closed.  Will have to check out the spot you went to sometime Jamo.  :)

Hello,

I live near Maitland and just went to Jerry's plains today.
Had a look under the bridge but didn't find anything.
I am new to searching for petrified wood.
Are there any areas near Maitland that have petrified wood?

Cheers

Aussie Boy
You can access the Hunter River at Jerrys Plains where the main road crosses the river. With a keen eye you may get some pieces of petrified wood or jasper. Alternatively you could try to get permission to access the river from a local farmer

Trouble with Jerrys Plains is too many horse breeding studs now.  Cannot get access across properties to get to river.

Hi Aussie Boy,

You can find some interesting Jasper on the beaches around there.  Caves Beach is pretty good but not where you swim - you have to head North right up to the next headlands you can see to find a fair bit.

A  bit further but there is also some interesting stuff in the Barrington Tops - small sapphire etc but you'll need to google it and do your research.  Strongly recommend checking out your local lapidary club as they'll have info but also often do organised trips you can go on and learn a lot.
