Title: Guyra - Tingha - Iverell
Post by: bak on March 10, 2018, 08:01:35 PM
First post and looking for some advice.

Planning on a trip to the from Brisbane to Guyra an surrounds area over the school holidays.  If we'd known earlier would have heading down this weekend for Minerama but will keep that in the calendar for next year.

We've got 8 days so can't stay too long anywhere.  The young fella (8 yrs)  has been reading an old readers digest Guide to Australian Gemstones from the 70's and he's stuck on going to Guyra, Tingha and Inverell.  Will stay in Girraween for a few nights on the way to do some hiking then onto Guyra for a couple of nights.  Maybe one night at Tingha then two or three at Inverell.  Completely new to fossicking other than a trip out to Lightning Ridge last year for opals but that was just scouring the dump heaps.  I've read you can learn a bit at Inverell but since we'll be going there last does anyone know how we might get some tips for our first stop at Guyra.  I've read there are a few public spots on a self drive tour.

Cheers
Brett

Hi Brett - there is a lot of information on this website. Just search around it. Most of my that thousands fossicking experience has been around Glen Innes. You can visit my Blog by clicking on the link below. There are always video links in the blogs as well. Prepare to have some fun but remember that thousands of fossickers have been there before you!

Great area to spend some time. If you can, try a pay to dig site, there are a couple out of Inverell, tag along tours can also be helpful, if you not quite sure what to do or where to go. The first stop should be the tourist information centres in the region you're in, they can help out often. Good luck with the trip and above all else, enjoy yourself!

Hi Ausdigfam,
I agree with Lord Thunda that Emmavile museum is a must see. While there you should pick some brains of those running the show. Local knowledge always helps.
At Inverell try to get in touch with their lapidary club for some expert local guidance.
Have a great trip.
Cheers,
colza

OOPS! Hit the wrong button. A bit of cut & paste & relocation will fix that.

Hi Brett,
My husband Craig and I are the new caretakers at Tingha Gems Caravan Park, having taken over from the previous caretaker Shaun in November, with our 2 young sons. We're only fairly new to fossicking, but would love to take you and your son our and show you a few good places for jelly beans and smoky quartz while you're in the area.
Cheers,
Rebel :)

Thanks Rebel,  not sure if we will be one or two nights (usual rushed school holidays trip :-)  ) but would love to take you up on your offer.
