Title: Mt Gambier- South Australia Fossicking
Post by: OlivineOlivia888 on January 11, 2019, 05:38:42 PM
Hello People of the Rocks :o,

I thought I might pop this question here as I have no idea who else to ask, my local lapidary club is closed until next week. So I'm heading out on a road trip from Melbourne to Mt Gambier (South Australia) and since I'll be so very far away from home I was hoping to squeeze in some fossicking/noodleing among the sight seeing. Anybody have any idea where I might find something?? ANYTHING?? I'm not after any gold, just some pretty rocks or gemstones.  :) :) :)

thanks in advance if anybody answers!

Hi OlivineOlivia888, welcome to the forum. Not sure if Mount Shadwell is still open, it's near Mortlake. If you do a search here on either Mount Shadwell or olivine you get heaps of info. Also Mooralla, near the Grampians has some nice smokey quartz, but you have to work hard for it. That's about the extent of my knowledge on the area, maybe someone from SA could help with closer to Mount Gambier.

Lots of flint comes out of the limestone around Mt Gambier, It would polish but fairly unintersting.
