Fossicking Locations / Fossicking in QLD
« on: April 05, 2021, 11:14:11 PM »
Hi everyone
Does anyone know anywhere around or reasonably close to the Sunshine Coast in QLD where I can take my two grandkids fossicking with a chance of them finding something. Even quartz will do. They're both really keen and I would really love them to get interested and take it up. Agate Ck or Mt Suprise would be perfect but it's too far away for them. Thanks in advance.

Hi Dan
Keeping in mind that I wont be getting back from LIghtning Ridge until towards the end of June, you may want to rethink your location for this years opal fossicking extravaganza. Besides White Cliffs there are numerous places to find opal with Quilpie, Winton, Opalton, Yowah, Toompine, Kyabra-Eromanga, Cooper Pedy and Andamooka to name a few.
This was a find at Yowah a little while ago.
Good luck.

Hi Dan
Firstly I'd start at the information centre in the main street of Lightning Ridge they know the latest news (0268291670). They also have maps of the area.
I only know one person in the Grawin area and he's not working his mine at present, so no new mullock heaps to go through.
If I've wanted to fossick (specking) I've asked the lessee if it's ok to go on his lease (I know a few people at 3 and 4 mile areas), however I also have fossicked on some of the dirt roads as council sometimes uses discarded opal dirt to patch the roads.
Actually I've got to go up in early June so I can check the lay of the land for you if you like.
White cliffs is of course an option, however you still have to keep off all leased areas unless you have permission.

Yes MakkyB
Unfortunately you're right, but it's also our fault for handing out that information, willy nilly. I know you try to help everyone but how do you differentiate between the good and not so good. Personally I think it's a shame, but from now on I'll be thinking about it and perhaps only handing out information to people I know or come highly recommended.

That's a real shame, half the reason of driving all the way out to Grawin was to fosssick on those heaps, the other half of course was the 'pub in the scrub' or the 'Glengarie Hilton'.
We've taken many a new fossicker there and they've usually found something.
Another example of the majority being stuffed by a few thoughtless few.
I wouldn't write off LIghtning Ridge entirely though, as there are other places to fossick at the Ridge.

Hi Jerry
Sorry to hear that you wern't able to get out there for awhile, I know how that feels.
We'll be at O'briens Ck (hopefully) on the 19th July and spend a few weeks up there, would be great to catch up if you're up there at the same time. We're going to stop at Lightning Ridge on the way back for about a week, if you're interested.

It's great to hear from you guy's, are you both still fossicking?
The second aqua I find is yours, I've promised the first one to my grand daughter who wants to come fossicking.

Hi Everyone
Has anyone been to O'briens Ck recently?
Is the camping ground still operating and if so, is it still being run by the same people?
It's been about five years since I was there, but I'm eager to get up there this year.

Thanks for the heads up Dihusky, just got back, you were right, not much in the way of fossicking but the historic stuff was much appreciated by my wife. Very sad, my first time fossicking since my shoulder operation about 4 yrs ago. Managed a few specimens, but that's it, have a few more trips planned so fingers crossed.

Hi everyone, has anyone ever fossicked around Grenfell (near Young) and if so, are there any decent spots to go.
I hear there are State Forests nearby?

Yes, I saw that comment on the blackberries but that was several years ago, has no one been there lately.
I am going regardless but it would be nice to know what I'm in for.

Hi everyone
Any recent fossicking information on Wee Jasper?
Haven't been for a long time and need places to stay (camping) and places to fossick?
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Grahame
Didn't get a chance to catch up with Graham as we stayed out at BB for only two nights, also had a rock pup with us and you know what it's like when you first start fossicking. I couldn't drag him away, I have however made a mental note to stay longer the next time and most definitely go and visit. By the way, Ill let you know about the secret spot when I see you next.
Jerry I haven't unpacked the van yet, but I will try to get the photos on this week.
