Please register and vote in November, there are 4 Aussies carving in this comp, will be some stunning carvings shown here, I was going to post my carving but I think it will reduce the response if I show it now, all I will say is its Tamworth Aussie jade.

Cabbing and More / Custom Dops
« on: May 25, 2014, 02:26:12 PM »
I made this stainless dop today to make a special little cab for a customer in Singapore, tig welded to a washer and cut and ground to the desired shape, having the correct tools and knowledge to make many of my own custom tools is a great benefit in cabbing and carving, the stone is Peruvian  opal.

Shows and Events / NSW Gemkhana 2013
« on: October 08, 2013, 12:03:49 PM »
I was not able to attend the state show this year due to work commitments but was told by a friend there was only 7 tail gaiters, and entry's were low in the comp, all the organizers give there time free, hats off to them but when you compare it to the Lismore show its a pittance with 100 tail gaiters and huge attendance, are the other clubs given the opportunity to run this,  why does it keep going back to Mudgee, surly it would create more interest if its venue was moved annually, different clubs different people would create more interest, is it that they have the best venue, surely other clubs could supply as good a location.

Shows and Events / Ridge opal comp.
« on: May 01, 2013, 10:37:16 AM »
Just found this, been looking for weeks for carving shows to enter, did not know they even had a carving division, both pro and amateur divisions, the hard part is finding quality crystal opal without fracture, any ideas of suppliers, most will not part with good opal.

Gemstone Discussions / Gemologist needed urgently
« on: April 14, 2013, 04:40:48 PM »
Would any members on this forum be a qualified gemologist or geologist, I need a certified hardness test done on the black jade I entered in the Gemboree, I have already supplied a xray diffraction test to prove the mineral type but this extra evidence will prove my case, I rang the president of AFLACA, was good to deal with but he said my carving should never have been removed without proof, this saga continues.

Gemstone Discussions / Gem silica
« on: March 27, 2013, 09:18:58 PM »
Some gem silica from Indonesia I acquired, 464 grams, this material is basically a chalcedony colored by chrysocolla or other blue green copper minerals, will make some awesome carvings and fancy cabs, the choice grade in this gem can bring higher prices than chrysoprase.

Cabbing and More / Aussie red
« on: March 23, 2013, 11:00:24 PM »
Started this carved heart today, a buying customer, its the highest quality piece I have carved, as good as it gets in AU, true imperial red, fine grain, sanded to 1200 carbide.

Cabbing and More / carving burs, points
« on: February 09, 2013, 04:46:03 PM »
Purchase a few sintered carving burs from Aussie sapphire, awesome results, 170 grit coarsest they had, this cone worked great, don,t seem as aggressive as new plated burs but 90% less humps and bumps and did not give up, would have used 2 or 3 plated on the same job, Need to see if I can get some barrels in 2mm dia, awesome product, not sure sintered could be made in small sizes, used sintered before, these are better.

Cabbing and More / Today's effort
« on: February 03, 2013, 06:31:07 PM »
Cut some awesome Aussie blue Tamworth jade today, very rare this piece, that good I had to cut and carve, my wife tried her first basic carving, Tamworth rhodonite, needs sanding and polishing, has some yellow in this piece, a cross over ribbon.
