The Great Australian Sapphire Adventure by Gail Bumala. A very nice read in the latest United States Faceters Guild Newsletter. Probably have to be a member to read it but I bet a lot of you are. NOT trying to get anyone to join just saying I thought it was very informative article.

« on: March 16, 2014, 11:07:44 AM »
Picked these up today at our rock swap, lunch and sell, we donate rocks and $ goes to scholarship fund. Any one wants to sell just set up and sell no cost for that. We have club rocks to sell also. A couple there that has been fossicking for many years had a lot of old stock from all over, not sure if they went to other country's or got them here. I'll post a picture.

Does this look like what you guys go out and find?

Gemstone Faceting / Smokey from mooralla
« on: July 17, 2013, 12:43:04 AM »
Do any of you have some pictures of faceted Smokey quartz from mooralla? Got some nice rough from The Rock Hunter and getting ready to facet some, they have something going on inside that could be cool. They are great specimens but not exactly rutilated.

Gemstone Faceting / Help with Andalusite
« on: April 13, 2013, 12:41:56 AM »
Trying to find good design for this stone. It's 7.5 ct. approx. 10mm x 8mm x 6mm thick. One end tappers down smaller than the other. Nice light green looking through top and bottom and side to side. Looking from each end there's some red which I hope to get showing at each end of table. Seems to be clean as far as I can tell. Cost $2.00 a ct so it wasn't to bad and this is the first Andalusite I've seen. Hardness 7.5 and RI 1.63-1.64, is there a problem with cleavage being distinct? Thanks for the help.

Gemstone Faceting / rough 3000 lap
« on: February 06, 2013, 03:38:46 PM »
I facet with a finger on the dop and stone while lightly moving on lap. I can feel the smooth running on my 260, 600, 1200 plated laps and my Batt. lap but when I use my 3000 it's like I'm running over a plowed field. So I just looked at my 1200 plated lap on a 15X microscope and it's smooth then checked the 3000 and it was very rough with highs and lows and looked like some groves. all my laps have cut between 15 and 20 stones. Any one have any ideas?

If I could get a picture with the scope I would take one, tried the other day and couldn't.
