Handy Tool

One of the drawbacks of spending half the year on your mining claim is that you get spoiled when it comes to digging tools and when you head off on your next fossicking trip you have to leave all those you beaut power tools at home. I just hate using tools that don't have a start button, but one that I knocked up a few years back has proved to be very handy.

It is a slide bar made from a 600mm length of 25mm OD steel pipe with a 100mm length of 25mm solid steel rod welded to one end to act as the driving force of the tool. The digging part of the implement is an 800mm length of tempered steel rod which inserts into the tube. It works like a jack hammer and is just the tool for getting into tight spots like around and under tree roots, boulders etc.

I reckon that's where the idea may have originally come from Garry.

I first saw a bloke using one at Mud Tank many years ago and after having a bit of a bash at it for a while I decided to make one for myself. It has become my main digging tool for those tight spots where you can't swing a pick.
