Powelltown area
« on: May 24, 2018, 03:59:34 PM »
Hi guys,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I have been visiting Powelltown quite regularly (big creek?) in particular (I think, I always wind up at the same place) and I seem to be finding bugger all. A couple of pieces of smoky quarts for all my efforts, and small pieces at that. Perhaps it’s my technique (I actually have no clue how to sieve properly - a guide would be handy if there is one available)

Are there any other places worth trying near by? I have tomorrow off, and a 4wd so I was planning on going for a look.

Thanks for reading,

Jeremy

Welcome to the forum, sploger. Many of the creeks in that area are worth a look, sieving technique for quartz is not particularly special, but the area is well worked over. You need to find somewhere that hasn't been dug before, or be prepared to dig down to the base of the gravel to find stuff that has been overlooked. AS it is mostly quartz in the gravel, it all is the same clear or not. All you need to look for is the clear stuff in the sieve. If you're looking for topaz or black tourmaline, which does occur in the area, it will settle to the bottom of the sieve as you work, so look there as you sort through whats left. Remember to lift and drop the sieve quickly, you trying to sort out vegetation from rock, and let small gravel pass through. I've been there a few times without success, so keep looking! Quite a few here have been into the area so you may well get more info from them.
Common sense isn't exactly common

splodger,

I agree with Bucket and am a regular out that way myself. If you are doing no good in one location do not hesitate to move and try elsewhere to dig. The gravel needs to feel tight and difficult to dig out of the creek. If it is easy digging it is highly likely the spot you are trying has been dug recently.

In regards to getting experience. Warragul Lapidary Club regularly runs trips for members in this and other areas within travel distance from the club. They can give pointers and tips in the how and what to look for. The club meets Wednesdays and Sundays at Logan Park (showgrounds/trotting track) if you would like to drop in.

Cheers.
Baaa humbug, not enough fossicking time!

Hi Splodger,
like Jamo I've visited Powelltown a lot, and it requires a bit of persistence. Sometimes digging in a hole that someone has left can be productive, but make sure you get below the sand, and into the gravel.
