Tumbling question

When tumbling advice recommends using soda with the first run do they mean soda ash, bicarb of soda, club soda...? maybe not that last one. Help would be appreciated.

This is usually recommended to avoid excess gas generation but can often be dropped out as not all rocks actually generate much gas or a quick "burp" is easily done to sort out the issue.

Mostly they will be talking about bicarb soda of which there is probably some in your pantry if anyone in the family does much cooking.

Alternatively, you can just take a look at your barrel after about 24 hours in the first run - assuming it is a Lortone or Thumler rubber barrel, you may see it bulging outwards slightly on the bottom if there has been a lot of gas produced in that first stage of grinding.  Just open the lid and release this gas - you are then right to go.

You will see lots of recommendations to add soda in the first stage - not sure it is absolutely essential.

Do many other tumblers on here do this?

i know one thing that if you ever have an acid spill that bicarb soda wiil neutralise it to a degree  depenting on the sort of acid
