Lapidary Club SAFETY
« on: March 01, 2013, 03:34:45 PM »
We have talked about safety before but had a customer here the other day who mentioned that the OHS people were doing some inspections of various lapidary clubs up in QLD recently and so he was chasing up a few MSDS to make sure they had all their i's dotted and t's crossed.

So it might be a good idea for all clubs just to take a quick look at their safety documentation and procedures to make sure they can handle any potential inspections and more importantly, keep all the members safe.

I know that it can be quite a job to get all the paperwork sorted from scratch so if any clubs would like to contribute SWMS to help out others who need to get theirs documented, feel free to post them here for the benefit of all. MSDS (Materials Safety Data Sheets) should be available from your supplier - just ask if they are not readily available on websites.

Please note that SWMS (Safe Work Method Statements) need to be created and discussed specifically in relation to your own situation so this is not intended to be a "copy/paste" exercise - ie. risk management decisions need to be made by the club itself. However, many of the points will be common to all so no point reinventing the wheel if others can assist. And it is worth all individuals considering these for their own usage.

The VGCA have some resources available - not sure if they will distribute outside of VIC but worth checking with them if you need some extra help:

This article on our website also has some links which may be of assistance.

Safety is always a priority.  The Vic site looks good

Here is a link to what NSW says about lapidary clubs
http://www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/newlegislation2012/volunteers-and-volunteer-organisations/Pages/volunteer-associations-without-paid-workers.aspx

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.
