Leard State Forest
« on: June 14, 2013, 11:12:48 AM »
I've just realised that Leard State Forest is possibly very close to where I used to get Thundereggs.
Can anyone tell me if there is a coal mine very close to Leard or it's name.
I got one about 900mm across (several glued together) from there and there was very little digging.  The average size of all the other ones are about 200mm or 8".  Not like the smaller ones I've see from Leard
I'd like to find out if the spot I used to go has been turned into overburden yet or is still accessible?  The people have moved off their farm.
Thanks

Hi Bigstuff try this topic , it is in Fossicking Locations :)
http://aussielapidaryforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=353.msg2404#msg2404

Still fossicking for thundereggs only have to avoid the protesters and eventually the coal mine.

If you mean the property at Dripping Point corner, it is sadly a no go these days as it changed owners.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Jimny
I received a reply from Narrabri council indicating that Leard State Forest is closed to the public - ????
Bummer
I'm still trying to Google Earth exactly where I got mine from

That's very bad news if the site is no longer accessible :(

Why would Narrabri Council be saying the site is closed - isnt access to State Forests controlled by Forests NSW?

However,  Leard does not appear on the list of Popular Forests - it is listed on the list of forests where there are no "recreational facilities" - not exactly sure what that means.

I would not trust the council rcomment.  Councils tend to worry about their insurance so automatically say no to what they see as risky activities like coal mine protesting or fossicking.  :)

Looks like you can still access the thunder eggs in Leard State Forest.  Just turn left directly at the protesters camp then left again a bit further up the track. You go down across a dry creek crossing then keep rising.  The protesters were still there June 13 so that part of the forest is unaffected by mining. ;D
