Skin polishing
« on: August 11, 2013, 07:43:28 PM »
Could someone explain what skin polishing is? This subject has never been mentioned at my club or referenced in any lapidary book that I have read.    I've only seen this term used in some of the ALF posts.  At first I thought some of the ladies were refering to some treatment done at their local beautician.
Could someone please enlighten me.  :-[ :-[ :-[

Regards Mario.S.  :) :) beers

Hi Malachi, You ask about skin polishing.  When we mined for sapphires there are times you find a crystal that has not formed correctly. part of it can be clear and part dense.  Some will show the 6 fingers of a star in them.  They are not good enough to facet, but too pretty to flick.  I use a flexi shaft with the same grit as the cutting laps for sapphire, you gradually get it to the stage of polishing, again using the same diamond powder used for sapphires.  They are so pretty especially if they have the star in them.  I will try and enclose a pic of a couple I have done recently.  It is time consuming from start to finish.  Sorry pics too large.././. will post to morrow with a different camera

Thanks Jay, they came through perfect and they look very impressive.  8) 8) 8)

A hundred times better than my wife's recent attempt to cabbing some colourless corundum she found near Eldorado.   :( :( :(
