Never found any onyx in Vic. If anyone has found some I'd be interested.

According to Mindat ... Onyx only occurs in Western Australia eg. Marble Bar.

Link here ... http://www.mindat.org/min-2999.html

Other books have references to Onyx being found at several places where Agate is found eg. Agate Creek but I'm not sure if any have been verified?

What does your friend want the onyx for. Black Spinel, in my opinion is better for jewellery making than onyx. Plenty of that going around.
I started out with nothing
And still have most of it left.

If he's just after a jet black gemstone Spinel wins hands down.
I've seen straight parrellell banding in various colours in a small % of "Agates" from many locations  that produce agates from around the country. I have never seen black/white Onyx........
The closest I've ever found is a clean black/white Jasper from NSW :)
Like any gemstone, the most desirable material is alway's the rarest and hardest to find and the fun is in the hunting  beers

Cheers
