Core sampling
« on: October 15, 2013, 02:09:44 PM »
Just watched a soil testing mob taking core samples on a part of our grounds that is going to have a new amenities block built. Looked like he had his drill down about 12 feet. It was small enough to be mounted on the back of a 4WD ute.

Got me wondering if there's anybody out on the CQ gemfields who takes samples to determine if deeper wash layers are present. Bluey, Col thinks there's a reasonable chance that there's a second wash on my place within reach of hand mining. There is just over the fence at about 6 feet in depth. Be good if there is both a second wash within hand mining depth in addition to the surface wash that I can always attack any time - say for example I get out there a fortnight after rain to find that my hole is still filled with water, I can always still go for the surface stuff since there's hardly any overburden to move (as long as the stuff isn't still too damp to trommel).

Probably be pretty exxy to get sampling taken if it is done out there - most likely I'll be doing the exploration the hard way, with me on the end of a jackhammer. :P

Hey Lefty.

Don't know about core sampling, but the is a bloke here that will put down a shaft, either 1000mm or 900mm. Would cost about then same as a core sample and it gives you somewhere to start digging.
I started out with nothing
And still have most of it left.

Ah ok, thanks Bluey. That's something to keep in mind.

Garry reckons he put down a shaft but didn't strike a second wash. Of course, he's a kilometre away from me near the bottom of the ridge so anything is probably possible over that distance.

Maybe there is a second wash and maybe there isn't - guess the only way to find out is to move the dirt.
