Finding agates in Victoria.
« on: November 29, 2013, 02:21:48 PM »
For more than three years, our family have been going to Eldorado and we’ve found about half a dozen reasonable agates by just specking the beaches.
Just recently on our last trip, John from Stoneage Gems near Beechworth came with us to Reedy Creek. While fossicking there he showed me his technique in looking for agates. His method was to use a small pick like a plough and feel for large rocks under the sandy beach surface.  Whenever a large rock was scraped by the pick, he would check to see if it was an agate. Unfortunately no agates were found, but he did find large piece of jasper.

Has anyone else on the forum applied this method with success?

No, but it's much the same as digging Malachi. Suppose not as much effort but you'd cover more ground / creekbed. Makes sense to me. I'll use this handy hint.

Used that method in far north Qld and also used a narrow long handled rake for fishing rocks out of deep water.:)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Picked up a small agate myself at Reedy Creek (Eldorado) this last visit. However, if you are looking for agates that are more plentiful the Avon River at Stratford is a good place to start.
Baaa humbug, not enough fossicking time!

Thanks for the tip on the Avon River Jamo.  :) Could you also please advise on Valencia Creek, is it 2 or 4 wheel drive access, and are the agates there as good as on the Avon?

Malachi

Two wheel drive is fine for Valencia Creek. There is a causeway crossing at Valencia Creek at which point you can have a look at the gravels. here is also a great little caravan park on a farm not far away which is great for relaxing and using as a base point for fossicking.

The agates are exactly the same as on the Avon. Valencia Creek is actually one of the headwaters to the Avon River. Actually anywhere where roads intersect the Avon/Valencia Creek is a good place to look as there is masses of gravel everywhere. You can also get rhyolite and jasper in the creek/gravels at Valencia Creek.

Cheers

Thanks a heap Jamo.  :)  I've been thinking of visiting Walhalla next year, so I'll probably be  extending my travels to Stratford and Valencia Creek as well.   :)
