« on: October 24, 2014, 09:22:24 PM »
Hi does any one out there know of any books on novelty/fancy/or silhouette faceting.
I would really like to try to design one.
Thanks in advance
Dee :)

Jon Rolf (Gearloose) did a video describing how he designed a Barion Shield or Freeform on the go.   Other designers on the Gemology Project sometimes add design comments to their efforts.   John Bailey has several videos explaining CAM designs.   But I don't know of any books on design.
Best idea is to experiment yourself.  Basically you can do any outline shape, and achieve a level girdle by adding a few barion facets at the girdle indexes.
Good luck.   Have fun, and please show us some of your results.
Regards,
Ghost

Hi Dee,
Welcome to the forum.
Hope the above is of some use to you.
I strongly recommend The Gemology Project if you are interested in new faceting designs.

A little of the subject but has any one turned the horse head into a cow? I know people into Brown Swiss and thinking about doing one for a fund raiser.
GemCad should help you with a design and play with light returns.

Hi,    I just finished a 15mm clear quartz "Oppositional Defiance" design by Arya Akhavan, instructions downloaded from Gemology Project.
The result is interesting and I am very pleased with it.   Wasn't too difficult either.

Anyone trying this design should probably allow for more height to width than the published finished ratios would indicate.

Have fun.
Regards,   Ghost.

I was privileged to see the finished stone today cut in Kapunda Quartz.

I think quartz from Kapunda is one of the best available for faceting. It appears to perform far better than quartz from other locations.

Ghost it would be great if you could post a 'photo for all to see.

Oppositional Defiance.

Picture doesn't do it justice.
No pink in the stone.   No window when viewed from most angles.
Fairly easy to cut.
