Sticking sieves
« on: January 05, 2015, 08:19:23 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has solved the annoying feature of the top and bottom sieves getting jammed together. Anything that can go around the circumference of the base of the top sieve that might stop this happening.

All stones cleaned out of bottom sieve before inserting top sieve is being done.

Hi Alan, I'm assuming that you mean the aluminium ones. I've been using them for around 40 ish years and still haven't worked out how to stop the jamming. I have worked out that it's the sieving action which seems to get the smaller stuff between the two sieves causing the jam, it doesn't seem to matter how clean they are when you start (I've even had brand new ones jam up). At work I used to use them for working through wood ashes and they still jam! If anyone else has any ideas I'd love to hear them as well.

What about a edge around the bottom of the top sieve so that it sits squarely on, and just in, the bottom sieve

Don't store the sieves in pairs and always sieve in deeper water with the top sieve shaken over the bottom one, not touching it. I know these ideas work, but they're not really practical.

I copied CJM, with 17 inch sieves use a tennis ball between them, with 13 inch use a squash ball or something of similar size.

There is a VERY simple idea I saw during Minerama one year. All that is needed is to put in 4 self tapping screws at 90 degrees to each other, from the OUTSIDE of the LOWER sieve. Never again will they stick together.  ;D

Thanks for the screw idea. Probably will cover pointy end with piece of rawplug to save fingers

I like that, thanks Bob. Alan all that would be needed would be to nip the points of the screws off  with a decent set of pliers.
Baaa humbug, not enough fossicking time!

Thanks Bob, I'll do the same with the rawlplugs.

I just ground the points off with the grinder. Surprisingly simple idea that works perfectly.  ;D Ever since I started doing it they have never stuck.  ;D

3 bits cut from plastic tube and superglued into rim of bottom sieve so fingers are safe. See picture.

::) ::) After looking at Alan C's pic I realised my mind was like a sieve too  ::) ::)
THE CORRECT INFO IS .......
All that is needed is to put in 4 self tapping screws at 90 degrees to each other, from the INSIDE of the UPPER sieve.
Pic is in media.
How stupid do I feel.  :-[ :-X
