Fossicking Locations Directory
« on: February 19, 2015, 05:49:32 PM »
Hi Folks

I'd like to share with you all a website I have been developing, designed to help you easily locate spots to go fossick - http://www.prospectinglocations.com

It is still very much a work in progress - needs more content and some of the existing features need some fine tuning - but it is usable enough as is. I am happy to receive feedback or suggestions for features - post them here, PM me or use the contact form on the site.

Edit:
Changed subject from "Newly developed site for fossicking locations" to "Fossicking Locations Directory"

LOL, isn't that the truth. I done most of the coding for the site on Valentines day and basically have been doing data entry since.

Doing the actual data entry is not so bad, but it takes time to hunt down details for each site (especially latitude/longitude).

Oh yeah, eventually I intend on covering as many spots as possible Australia wide. I have started with NSW because that's the information I have most readily available.

Good idea. Excellent to be able to see this information in a geographically based format.

Might just need to double check sites as you go just to be sure information is accurate.

For eg. Glen Innes lists Dwyers as a site which as far as I understand is now closed.  We may be partly responsible for this as I do vaguely remember including it on a Google Map plugin that was on a previous version of the Minerama website.  It has been a long time since I looked at/revised that data and so it should not really be still out there on the net.  Sometimes there is old info out there in the public domain that is not up to date (we are guilty of this ourselves so it is not a criticism of others - just a request for help).

So as ALF members review the sites that they are familiar with, I am sure daruthe would appreciate some ground-truthing to ensure accuracy.  If you know of sites that are not included or sites that should be removed, then please pass the info on.

cheers

I am aware that some of the sites I'm entering are likely closed - I have an atrtibute that I can attach to those sites "Former Fossicking Area".

There are far too many sites for me to verify them all. So yes, any assistance ALF'ers can provide to verify information would be greatly appreciated (and credited).

To assist with this I may look at adding a verified to both a location in general, and the minerals that can be found there, and maybe even a last updated.

This also I feel is a timely reminder that even though I am making this information readily available and try to ensure the information is as accurate as possible, before fossicking at a site you should do your own research to confirm if you can fossick in an area, and that that area contains the minerals you are looking for.

Fossickers would avoid a lot of disappointment by doing that.

Indeed - which is part of the reason why I have the links to the various states Mines departments on the navigation menu
