4wd spots that I normally can't get to
« on: April 24, 2015, 04:12:20 PM »
Recently bought a 4wd ute – wanting advice on spots where a 4wd is needed?  The ute is new so not CRAZY 4wd-ing or where drug farmers go.
Totally open as to what to fossick for – any colour, size or thing.  Gemstones to even nice granite, large agate or marble, meteorites, tektites or even fossils - Anything.
Between Sydney and Gympie – Coastal or inland to the western borders.  Please just give a name and I can search the Forum for it or PM details.  Not after secret spots but if you want it kept quiet then PM please - thanks

Hi Bigstuff  :)

Lets see, where a 4WD would be usefull but no crazy 4WDing or 'plantations'.

Have you tried Ewingar , Yowah/Sheep Station Creek, Swipers Gully, Deep Creek, Lightning Ridge. From your posts you have tried Inverell area. Torrington area is safe still as the wacky 'plantioner' is still in jail. Ophir, Sofala, Oberon, Mt Isa.

If you ever decide to head north, there is always the sapphire fields out of Emerald or Agates at Agate Ck and O'Briens Creek for topaz.  :)

Would you call this too crazy 4WDing. Start of the jump ups above O'Briens Ck.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Thanks JJ - No that's fine Is it because of the photo or is that reasonable in a 2WD?
Agate Creek is on the bucket list.  I'll look up those you mention that I haven't been to - thank you so much

That is only the start of the jump ups.  They get more interesting as you go.  Yes do able, :) just take it slow and plan your line of travel.  First time each year I stop at a couple of pull off spots and check the track conditions for changes. Easier than a few odd tracks at Agate Ck.

Done them in a Suzuki Jimny for a number of years.  Have done it since in a SWB Pajero with road tyres. :)

Hey JJ, hear your goin up there this year lucky bugger, I always had the most fun with the last creek crossing before the jump-ups, there was a rock in the middle of the creek and it left a couple of dozen dints in the muffler of the Prado  ;D probably just as many as I went up, great spot wish I could get back up there, will one day

Hi Tripz the last year that I took my jimny there was a boulder in the track just after that creek crossing. Got half way over it opened my door and found that the chassie was rocking on the boulder.  :o  Rock cutting on my left, drop into the gully on right.

Had no choice but to slowly reverse down and back across the creek, park and walk up the jump ups.  Can guess I did that only once.  ;D

That rock was gone the next year I went up in the pajero.  :)

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.
