Complete Beginner and Novice
« on: January 06, 2015, 11:24:42 PM »
Hi All,
Firstly want to start by saying HI, Im a complete beginner but have always been in love with rocks, gems and crystals. I have decided to jump in and start fossicking where and when I can.

My first "silly" question is: I live in Maryborough QLD, and am looking for somewhere to have a dig within a 1 hour drive as I really don't get much time off, does anyone know where I can go? Mostly looking to hunt gems and crystals.

My second "silly" question is: if there aren't any areas that people know of, what geographical/landscape characteristics in the land am I to look for, for a potential spot?

I really appreciate your help and thanks for having me here. I hope to contribute some great finds soon. Please feel free to email me.

Kind Regards
Jason

Welcome to ALF Jason. :)
I know there is gold near Maryborough

Best people for info would be your local club, Maryborough Gem & Mineral Society Inc
You will find it listed half way down this page
http://aflaca.org.au/members/queensland-gem-clubs-association-qgca/
or http://www.mineral.org.au/clubs/clubs.html
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Does the Mystery Craters place still exist near Bundaberg? They used to have some very nice crystals. Taking to them is also a good place to start for local information. Last time I went past they were a bit expensive for a look at holes in the ground :D

There are plenty of places in the hinterland where you can find tunder eggs and a couple of hours drive you ave some very nice geological features like the scoria mountain at Thangool.  Inland to Emerald (now that's clue !)
And who doesn't love coal? It literally falls of the back of a truck up there !
Yes, I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial.

Can someone give advice on tumbling garnets? Or even a book or site to go to?  Brian

Hello Brian,
Wade through this .....
http://aussielapidaryforum.com/forum/index.php?board=3.0

All the info you might need should be here - Get the 'fall' right and you should be OK.

Hello Jason Mc
If you have not already been over to the Murgon/Cloyna area for agate and carnelian, you could try that way.

Garnet is a bit harder than the usual quartz type rocks so do not recommend Cerium Oxide polish - Tin or Aluminium Oxide will work better and you may need a pre-polish stage as well. They come up really nice but be patient.

All of the usual suggestions apply plus take care to load barrel to optimal level with a mix of different sized stones in the load.

Lots of info out there.

Here are another couple of articles we have put on our website for beginners:

There are some other links for more info in the articles.
