First fossicking Trip
« on: May 03, 2015, 07:55:34 PM »
[/img]In anticipation of the new Cabking turning up, Today we ventured out to Chillingham. We didn't have a clue what to expect, or what to look for. We have purchase all our rocks on the internet or at gem shows up to now.

We seeked advice off anyone willing to offer it lol at one point I was stood on a big lump of Jasper and the guy showing me his finds couldn't believe his look once he spot it. But my foot was on it.

we was happy with what we came away with. I cut the biggest open as soon as we got home, making a bit of a mess of it.
If anyone could identify the rocks shown i would love to know what they are and how they will polish :)

Hi anlopa
You have one picture in the gallery. If you opened it below the picture are some codes you can copy paste into your post to add pictures.

Looks like you had a successful first trip, it's great fossicking with the family.
Looks like you have some chalcedony, no sure on the bit that looks like wood, and the big greenish/purplish bit that might be jasper.
Cheers
Andrew

Good going Anlopa, its terrific that you had some nice finds, particularly when your having a go and your not sure what your doing. That's very encouraging to get out again and continue the experience of fuelling the desire to search for more of the same and even dare to try to find something different.   :) ;)

Cheers  beers

The big pale orangeish rock on the rh side of the photo is most likely chalcedony as are the smaller pieces the same colour.  The colour is likely surface staining from the soil where they were dug.  They polish up a treat.

I have also collected turtleback nearby at tyalgum.  Turtleback os calcedony that  grows in bubbles so when cut you can see growth patterns like turtle shell.

You can also get banded chalcedony /white agate called sardonyx.

All polish up a treat.

The porous spotty piece at bottom of photo is unlikely to polish.  Oft referred to as chuckerite.  Interesting as a specimen.
