What kind of flat lap to get?
« on: December 16, 2020, 08:05:17 AM »
Hiya

Well, just about to order a 14 inch slab saw.
Now to flat laps.  I suspect that I need an 8 inch if I am getting to 14 inch slab saw?

However, I am a bit confused as to what type I should get.  There seems to be a vibrating flat lap and a flat lap.  Other than one vibrates and one doesn't , I have been looking online and not sure which one is best and why.  Bench space is an issue for me as I also have my tumblers taking up real estate.

Thank you all in advance.

A vibrating flat lap has one job, that is to grind and polish flat faces on sawn rocks, It is very manpower intensive, needs constant supervision, slow, messy and only is good at polishing large rocks, smaller light rocks and slabs are a waste of time without weights being added.

What do you plan to do with the flat lap?

A wet grinder could be the answer. It is sort of like a variable speed 4 inch angle grinder that is used wet with diamond pads on it.
