Gems stolen, Mt Surprise  A/Senior Constable Aleda ROBBINS  on Aug 26, 2015 @ 9:19am                   Police are investigating a break and enter at a private museum in Mt Surprise where six topaz crystals was stolen.
Initial investigations suggest unknown people have entered the business on Garland Street Mt Surprise through a back door and stolen six topaz crystals, sometime between August 10 and August 19.
The ‘Big Blue’ was the largest gem stone to be found on the Mt Surprise gem field and was discovered by Mrs Gadd in 1976.  She sold it to Mrs Wallace’s first husband and it became part of a private collection, along with the other five crystals stolen, which is still held by Mrs Wallace, who has been mining topaz, tin, sapphires and gold since 1978.
Mt Surprise is a small township about 200km south-west of Cairns and situated about 43km from Mt Surprise is O’Brien Creek.  This gem field is well-known for gem-quality topaz, attracting visitors from all over Australia and overseas.
Topaz is quite distinctive and easy to pick out.  It’s cold, heavy and translucent and some have a clear blue or yellow tint.  Topaz is a hydrous silicate of Aluminium and Fluorine, it often occurs in acid igneous rocks, such as granite, where crystals may occur in pegamites.  Mt Surprise is known for its clear or light blue topaz and you can also find smoky quartz, aquamarine, citrine and if you lucky you might even find a diamond.

Mongrels!

I think that might be the place that I bought a little bag of faceting topaz on my visit there when I failed to turn any up (ok,was only there a couple of hours for a quick stickybeak). They had quite a nice collection of stuff there. Shame about that.

That's terrible...I hope they get caught and the book thrown at them.
It would be good to have weights and better pictures so our forum and gem clubs can keep a look out for those stones.
I hate thieves.

Do you know if it was any of the stones in Wwoofa's pic that was stolen? Or are there any other pics out there of them? It would be good to get the word out there to try and prevent the thieves from unloading them ... and if possible, maybe their conscience may get the better of them and they return the stones. Here's hoping

That's not good to hear. Certainly don't want those thieves getting away with it. Will get word out about it.

There was that big meteorite stolen last year from Atherton as well.

Sounds like a professional job.

That is really bad news ... but I guess I'm not totally surprised.  The pieces really should have been in the Australian Museum or somewhere like that with more security.  I really hope they catch the thieves .... hopefully they will find the gems a bit hard to sell given how famous they are?

Hi all, Trish Wallaces daughter here - we would appreciate approval for photos of the stones (including Wwoofa's) so as to use images for posters/reward.

Please advise if you approve for images to be made public.

Appreciate any help, cheers Suzette
