GemRay observation
« on: November 10, 2016, 09:02:49 AM »
I have noticed that light leakage and surface reflections are both represented in white on the Gemray animation of the gem.  This has led me to think a stone that windows is giving a good reflection at that point.  I had been mistaking head shaddow (black) for windowing (no light return).

Changing the leakage colour to a mid strength yellow dofferentiates between surface reflection (white) head shaddow (black) and light leakage (pale yellow).

The colour of the leakage varies from pale yellow (total loss) through a range of oranges depending on the mix of reflection and light loss.  This is when using the standard purple gem colour in Gemray.
Yours Sincerely

I'm pleased to see facetors are realising the value of a program such as Gemray for Windows .I gather you leave the gem colour amethyst , and the leakage a mid yellow . What do you have as the background colour ?

Correct,  The Background colour just seems to be the colour around the outside of the stone, it does not seem to show through as windowing.

Sorry John,

I should have answered your last question better, I've left the background colour as white because when I changed it to another colour, it didn't change the colour of the windowing area, only the colour of the background outside the representation of the stone.

In light of Raj's comments, I will try it again with the RND function.

Gordon

hehe, no confusion.. I was just poking fun because you keep mis-spelling my name, by misspelling yours and adding a wink... I'm French Canadian, not Indian.

Anyway, doesn't matter. Sorry to distract from the topic at hand. I enjoy these technical discussions about gem optimisation, especially the software side of things.

We recently played with an SRB by cutting star facets on the pavillion.  When optimising with Gemray we allowed it to select pavillion angles lower than the critical angle.

Sure enough it selected the little star facets and then optimised the mains and break facets.

Worked a treat.  Best result for an SRB I have seen in a long time.
