You need to 'resize' your picture so it is a smaller file. This will be an option in whatever program you use for viewing and editing your photos.

I currently have the gallery set to accept images with dimensions no larger than 1200 pixels width or height.  There is also a file size limit but you normally wont go near that if you use dimensions of 1200 or less.  So perhaps just check the dimensions of your image as well.

The reason we have to do this is because we (Aussie Sapphire) pay for all of the hosting and bandwidth for this forum.  We dont try and cut down on the operating costs by selling advertising on the forum - although some companies have asked to place ads, we dont do this because quite frankly it is annoying.  We just pay for it.

The forum is a free service to all of the members but it actually costs us real dollars.  There is no need to post very large sized images on the forum but if we dont make it so that these larger files cannot be accepted, that is what many people post (ie exactly how they come from their camera).  It does not add anything to the viewing experience and in fact some people might prefer to keep control of their high resolution versions but it just makes it a bit easier for us at the admin end to keep it all up and available.

Cheers
Leah

Well put Leah. I recently looked into creating a non profit website for myself and yes its an ongoing cost commitment. Adds are an obvious way of offsetting some of those costs, but like you said its annoying to the users. So thankyou on behalf of us all for keeping this forum uncluttered and free flowing  beers

I agree with Gym Ranger, it's been great even thought I don't use it as much as I used too. It seems like I remember when we were saying almost 1000 members.

Thanks to Leah and family

One tip for re-sizing your images is to email them to your phone, save them to the picture gallery / camera roll, then go in and select the image there and re-email them back to yourself.

When you email it back to yourself from your phone it generally lets you choose a range of file sizes by reducing resolution which is only a problem if you are looking at the photo on a larger scale but not an issue for images for the gallery here.  So you just pick a smaller file resolution and save it back to your computer to load to the gallery.

I've been using Irfanview for years,. It's an excellent, uncomplicated and free app for basic image editing (downsizing etc).

Big plus from me for Irfanview.  It is literally the first thing I install on any new computer.

Fast, easy and does this simple stuff without any fuss at all.  I have other programs for some more complicated stuff but really not much Irfanview cannot do these days.

cheers
