Removing mud from chrysophrase
« on: July 12, 2018, 06:29:58 PM »
Hi, I recently came into possession of a bucket of what looks like iron stone with veins of chrysophrase through it.  Most of the Iron Stone has decomposed and easily washed of with high pressure water, but I'm wanting some advise on what to remove the rest of the hard material off the chrysophrase with.  Thanks Tinker.

Hi tinker, it probably depends on the width and location of the veins and what you intend for the chrysophrase but what about some cutting? I've cabbed and polished some with its country rock and it has come up well for a pendant or a ring etc.,
Cheers,

I dig it.

The harder iron stone is possibly silicated and could be difficult to remove. Like colza if the ironstone is hard enough to take a good polish I would leave it there, if it is friable then a bit of careful chiseling could remove it.

Okay fella's thanks for the info, its fairly soft the iron stone, so I think i might use a dremel to get some of the iron stone out, the pieces are about six inchs long and are about 10mm thick. beers

That sounds the go tinker. They sound good size pieces to do a variety of stuff.
