Chinchilla - Miles fossil wood

Hello all! Really excited about very first fossicking adventure in Australia! Thinking of stopping around Chinchilla and Miles on my way to Kowguran day after tomorrow. I have learnt there are few good spots to find great fossil wood specimens in this area. Does anyone know any further details about the best spots in this area? Would be great to find a good one as my first find in Australia:) Thank you everyone!

You don't really need any special spots around there, petrified wood is everywhere.
Find a gravel side road so you are off the highway and just walk down the road, it's on the side of the highway too but I find it more peaceful walking the back roads.

The South East Qld link has locations, information and maps for petrified wood pay sites on private property. otherwise check edges of gravel roads.
Please do not forget to buy an online fossicking permit for Qld

Thank you Rusted and JimnyJerry! That sounds really exciting! I will be buying the licence at the Chinchilla visitors information centre the same day. I was also thinking of paying to enter the designated areas as well. Would you suggest doing that or the gravel roadsides in the area are as rich as the designated areas? The payment is not much, I am concerned about the value of the time I spend there as I would not have more than 2-3 hours to spend there...

I think you can also visit the information centre and get directions/pay a small amount to go to a number of digging locations.

Hi Deccan, welcome to the forum. If you go through Miles it's worth stopping at the Pioneer Village on the Brissy side of town. They have some of the best slabs of petrified wood that you will probably ever see. It's a huge display.
As far as collecting your own, I haven't been to the pay sites but as suggested find some out of the way side roads and in particular look in the water runoffs. Also cuttings etc. Good luck with your fossicking, I'm sure you find plenty.
