Stanthorpe tips or general topaz fossicking help
« on: January 22, 2020, 08:54:23 PM »
Hey guys don't really know where to post or what to do here but giving it a go. Having a crack looking for Topaz in the Stanthorpe, Glen Aplin area. Unsure exactly where to be digging in the creek. Dig straight in the middle? Into the side of the banks? Look where rocks can get in granite boulders? Cheers guys

Welcome Jeff, That link Jimnyjerry added has some great info, however a couple of the web links are outdated.  Here is a current one that covers that area, of note is that Swuipers Gully is closed at the moment due to logging. https://www.qld.gov.au/recreation/activities/areas-facilities/fossicking/south-east. This one covers rules and responsibilities when fossicking. https://www.qld.gov.au/recreation/activities/areas-facilities/fossicking/rules/designated-areas
Hope they help out, it's an area I'd love to get to as I've seen some lovely citrines coming from there.
Common sense isn't exactly common

Hey fellas cheers for the links.

Only stayed for one night unfortunately it was pretty hot and dry. Some mangy looking water i didnt car much to get in but had a bit of a dig around some granite boulders and made a couple of holes. Found a few older backfilled spots in the Severn river so a few people have obviously had a dig and hopefully had better luck. Found a couple interesting enough quartz crystals and 1 pebble which i think is a topaz but will have to get that one confirmed.
Very hard to get down to the creeks there and find a decent spot that isnt around private property or just swamp. The 1 "topaz" i did find was in the severn river at the country style caravan park. The owner said she didnt know too much about it but told us to go for it in terms of digging up the river as we were the only campers in the whole park, haha.

Did find a very beautiful park of quart pot creek full of very large granite boulders with good access which might be a good spot for specking as a bit of gravel seems to get trapped up there with a decent but of rain.  I can throw up some photos tomorrow of the pieces i found and location but for now im sleeping off this sunburn
