Leard state forest thunder eggs
« on: February 01, 2021, 09:00:18 AM »
Hi,
We are heading out Barraba way in the heat! Just wondering if the thunder eggs site is still accessible and if anyone can direct us to the location. Old posts refer to it being near the mine protesters site but not sure where that was. Many thanks in advance!

Road in from Boggabri has been blocked by mine rail transport. Only possible way in is from the NE via Maules Creek on the Leard State Forest Rd and even then you would need prior permission from the mine to traverse the road through there mining lease. Road could have haulage vehicles on it. So sorry the long answer is fossicking site cannot be accessed. As to the turn off that heads up to the fossicking area being still there and driveable I have no idea  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Hey mate. New to the forum.

Hoping you could indicate on a map where the fossicking location was? MOved to the area and keen to have a crack out there. Large swaths of  the forest are still accessible, you just have to work around mine blasting times.

Cheers,

Bucket

Welcome to the Forum Threecoursemeal. While I understand your keenness to get out and find some gems, you will find that most here guard their 'spots' quite closely due to areas being abused by others when locations are given out. Even worse, some areas have been abused that badly they the areas have been closed off to fossicking. Many here can attest to loosing areas because of over use, leaving open holes, rubbish being left etc. While it is up to the individual to release information, most will only give a general area, not an exact location.

The best way to get to know locations is to join your local lapidary club, if you can. They normally would have some type of field trips on a regular basis and can help identify what to look for and how you find it as well as where. Good luck with your fossicking.

Thanks Bucket. New to the forum, not the hobby! Well aware how tight-lipped we can be about locations.

Wouldn't normally be asking so explicitly but there's a whole heap of detailed information regarding the Leard Forest public thunder egg area in previous posts on this forum. Someone had even uploaded a mud map but it's unfortunately been lost to time. Also because the area appears to have been abandoned due to the coal mines in the area.

If no-one chimes in here I'll go down the pub and ask some locals. Cheers.
