Fern for a 50th birthday present
« on: March 07, 2021, 08:56:31 AM »
This is a fern cab I recently made for a friends 50th. Gee it was a bit of a struggle using my cabbing machines worn out wheels. The fern is heavily silicafied(is that a word) and really hard material work. I even had a go with using leather cord for the first time, never tied a cats paw or slip knot before but thanks to google I found some instructions to follow :)End result I really like.

Very nice. Is that some form of agate?

It is jurassic tree fern Osmundacaulis tasmanensis, buried my ash and lava about 180million years ago. Then over millions of years it was silicafied by I think mostly upwelling water collecting silica from ash and basalt. The cab shows the eyes of the fronds, if you look closely you will notice an large amount of detail has been preserved.

There is some really beautiful fern at Lune River if you find the right spot  ;)

Try "silicified".

Yeah I was wondering if that was a word, my spelling is terrible, no guarantee I get it correct next time  ;D But I'll try.

Very nice Makky. Another example of your Lune River fern.
Have you flat cabbed that piece?
What do you use to drill and countersink the holes? Are they special drills?

Life is not all about the final destination, but the journey taken.

Hi Mouse,Cab is curved on both sides. I counters sunk with a cone shaped sintered burr. Drilling was pretty slow going I need to buy some small sintered hole saws that seem to work better.CheersMB

Just looking at it now, I'll have to take another photo as it is drying out and getting more contrast.
