Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of doing my first trip to O'Brien's and Agate Creek next year(2022)

What time of year is the best time to go to avoid the floods and the heat?

I've wanted to go to Agate Creek since I was 11 years old and I'm now 60 so you could say it has been a life long dream! Any tips and info would be much appreciated regarding fossicking, camping, vehicle preparation anything that you can think of that may be helpful!

Best time to go is May, June, July.  Can still get a spot of rain which means you just have to wait till the tracks dry out or till the river goes down.

The early birds are there just before Easter before the grader goes through and some stick around till September but they can cope with the heat.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Hi Jimnyjerry,

Sounds good! How long does it take for tracks to dry out or rivers to drop as I will be on a time schedule and don't want to waste any time hanging around doing nothing!

I will be on long service leave from the job that I have been at know for the last 31 years, so I guess timing is essential!

For Agate Creek the months everyone else said should be good, you aren't going to be stuck in there for more than a few days if there's rain, it would only be a thunderstorm not full blown monsoon rain. All you have to do is sit tight until the road is dry.
If you are going to Agate creek for a week you will need a weeks worth of supplies, there's always someone going into Georgetown though can pick up a few essentials. Don't worry too much about your vehicle, people drag caravans out there so it's not too bad. Some of the tracks around Agate Creek itself are just tracks and a high clearance vehicle will be needed.
Same with Obriens Creek, the lower regions are pretty accessible to a high clearance vehicle, the upper regions the track is abysmal and a really competent vehicle and driver are required, apart from that beautiful spots, both of them, just do it.

As Rusted said you just have to wait it out.

That is why you take extra supplies.
