Gemboree 2021 Hobart
« on: April 02, 2021, 06:28:20 PM »
I've just created a new image folder for "Gemshows and Events" in the Gallery and put a heap of photos into it. If any are too blurry comment Delete on them and I will remove. It is a case of quantity and sometimes not quality as many of the photos were take through display case glass.
It was a beautiful sunny day, good turn out, covid distancing was completely ignored so hopefully the mainlands didn't contaminate us.
Photos should keep you busy for a bit Mehoose!. Did I buy anything? ,not a thing, some how 4+ hours rapidly disappeared just chatting with everyone. Meet a few people and had a really enjoyable arvo. I was going to buy some rough but prices were many multiples of the prices I've been paying online.Hopefully those here that couldn't make it enjoy the photos, pity the order seems to have shuffled a bit on the upload. And congrats Frank on your success !!

No wonder your 4 hours disappeared! You were too busy taking pics.. there's heaps Makky! Some lovely items and I'll have a closer look at the entries later.
For the traders, did you notice regular sales happening or was it folk just looking? I hope they do well over the weekend.

Did they have a number limit in the halls?I know up this end, many are going about as if nothing happened, and we copped it the hardest along here. I admit I too have lapses, getting a bit too close for a chat but I always do the hands and trolley. What they need to remember is there's folk getting off the boat and using our servos etc... so we should be a bit more focused.

As to your end, I'm glad DD made the decision just this past week to start her leave so we'll cross the fingers for the next fortnight-month that we don't get any new cases.
Well, I might have missed out on the fun but I'm thoroughly enjoying the pics. By the time the next one comes around, hopefully I'll have a decent amount of readies ready.... and, by that time, one can hope I've worked out my faves that I prefer to work with and can focus on maybe an extra special one or two.
Keep em comin!!!

Photos were easy, and even easier to bulk upload once I figured out how. Looked to be a good amount of sales happening, numbers dropped off later in the day. There was a big line up when we arrived just after 12. No screening at the door, just taking contact info.

Good pics of the Gemboree there Makky and thanks for the compliment. Haven’t heard anything from them about  the comp.

If I knew they hadn't informed you of the results I'd have taken more photos. How many stones did you enter ?

I entered six stones. One concave and the rest standard faceted stones.

I remember seeing the 1st and special I have in the photos. I think I also noticed a second place. But I didn't look at them all as the photos wouldn't have been very good how the stones were displayed. If you would like to know I can try asking someone to have a look for me tomorrow.I should have paid more attention.

Thanks for the offer Makky but I will wait till they get round to telling all the entrants how they went. I'm sure they will do it after the show is finished.

Hi Frank,

I'm sorry to see you were the only entrant in the Concave section.  I cut too slowly to enter both the Gemboree and the AFG annual comp.  Am currently working on the crown of my AFG concave entry.  I just have to get the cat hairs out of the table, then I can perfect the meets on the remaining crown facets and polish them.

regards
Grodon
Yours Sincerely

Haven’t cut anymore concaves since that one, though will be cutting the one for the AFG. Have cut 3 out of the 4 standard entries and working on the instructions for the crown on the other stone.

Feeling a bit ignorant... in the list of place getters from the AFLACA site, I'm noticing the term 'display only' next to quite a few entries. Is this because they've been disqual'd for whatever reason?
Keep em comin!!!

Got my stones back from the Gemboree. I recognised some of the names in the score sheet on their website, see them in the annual AFG annual comp. Got to get around the 99-point mark if you’re going to compete with these guys. Unfortunately, I only did that with one out of my six stones entered, lost the 3 points allocated to the girdle thickness on three of my stones. Averaged 96.1 on those stones so got to put more effort into getting the girdle right in future.

Great work.  Have you got a graticule loupe for measuring the girdle thickness?

Yours Sincerely

Got a 10x graticule loupe, haven’t had it for long, so may have not had it when cutting those stones. Previously used a card with lines on it going from .1mm to .5mm thick. The scope comes with a transparent card among other things has a measuring scale in 0.1mm increments. That will be my future girdle measurer.
