International Faceting Challenge.
« on: April 19, 2021, 04:00:49 PM »
Close to getting started on the stones I’m going to cut for this comp. One stone “Leaf in the wind” has to be cut in light green synthetic spinel. I’ve contacted my usual suppliers and none of them have green spinel. Does anyone know where I could get some. Thanks.

Hi Steve,
Yes I've seen green spinel on eBay, but it looks emerald green. They may not regard that as light green and disqualify my entry.

I think the #149 tourmaline green is the lightest you can get. I don't have any green or I'd give you some Frank. Some of the emerald green are fairly light as well.

Their ebay store seems shut atm, till the 22nd.

The store is well worth watching as they had a 50% off sale last year.

I found I could not place an order on their website, so found another seller on eBay selling 149 spinel, also in the US.

My thoughts as well, having seen your meet points on your macro shots, I think you'd be well suited to having a go at least, Frank.

No, I won’t be cutting that one, will take forever to cut the crown. The stone I’m cutting in my scope thread about the pencil showing up the facet edges is the pavilion of Lily from that comp. So far I’m half way through the 3k pre-polish, still just using the scope and computer screen to work with and the odd verification with the loupe that what I’m seeing is correct.

Got my boule of synthetic 149 light green spinel from the US. So will get that pre-formed and dopped shortly. Had to scrap “lily” because of the tiny bubbles in the boule. This was the bottom end of a corundum boule that I had cut a few stones from without a problem.
Saw little pits in the surface of some facets while polishing, from past experience it’s because the 3k pre polish has not removed all the 1200 grit finish. So recut the 3k and started polishing again, saw the same problem again and this time saw a faint thin cloud in part of the stone. Something you would see in a Zircon. Don’t recall having this problem with synthetics in the past, though for none comp. stones I probably didn’t notice them.
