You should go on an adventure with Agate Creek QLD the main focus of your trip :) Lots of agates, thunder eggs and geodes.

Where ever you visit on your trip spend a bit of time and enjoy each spot.

Gemtree and Mud Tank,   Both out of Alice Springs NT for Garnets, Zircons, plus Others.
No collecting, but an interesting trip is Undulla Lava Tubes, Qld.

Have a nice trip.

I'd also recommend doing the Dinosaur Trial though QLD, including visiting Opalton(fossicking site) when going to Lark Quarry and the free dinosaur dig sites at Richmond.

Google is your friend here-eg Gemstone locations in Queensland Australia (lapidaryworld.com) you will find similar sites for other states. Given your young age it is good to see your interest - are your driving the trip planning for the adults or is this planning for a school project.  Also if you type in google location of each of the gems/ minerals you  are researching you will get hits of where that particular item is found in Australia.

Even here if you search by each one it will bring up a LOT of old threads!  Obviously some are useless comments but you'll get info from others back almost a decade.  If not precise info they'll often given you region and an extra google search with region name and relevant stone will bring up even more stuff - threads on other forums, websites etc.

Hi and welcome to the forum. The one you indicated you really wanted (Maltese Cross) is actually called Chiastolite and from a trip I did many, many years ago, I know it occurs in an area near Olary in S.A., which in turn is located west of Broken Hill. As I was only 14 at the time myself, memories of where it's located there are dim, but there was a general store there that was very helpful. While you must realise that this store may not even exist anymore, these can be a good start for info. As Mr Sydney said, try a few searches here, you might be surprised as what you can find.

Aussie Boy, Google lapidary clubs of Australia.

http://www.lapidaryworld.com/clubs_australia.html

Depending on your route it may well be worth while to string together a list based on the route and make contact with clubs before starting your trip. If you can establish a friendly link with each club you may find people happy to help you work out likely spots.

Also nice to have a social contact as you head towards your various destinations.

Another link worth looking at is to Google exploroz  This website has a forum where you can post questions about camping, road conditions, camping equipment and anything else about travelling around the country.

There are now many parts of the country which are Aboriginal Homelands for which you need a permit to enter.

I am sure other members would like to hear more about your plans. Travelling with family? What kind of rig? Camping? What kind of equipment etc? How long are you allowing for the trip? Is this a retirement adventure. And when do you plan to head off?

If you are not a member I would also suggest you join the AAA and sign up for an plan that also offers accommodation and other assistance in the event of auto problems which, of course we hope you don't have. A very practical form of insurance.

You may well be an experienced outback traveller in which case the following may not be of interest. In remote areas the moment you see a kangaroo.. slow down. They are very erratic and may suddenly turn and come back across your path. And one kangaroo may well be followed by a second or third. The greatest risk is at dusk when they are more inclined to be near roads. Another watch out is birds gathered by road kill on the road ahead. Large kites may also change direction and hit your windscreen. At speed you have a shattered windscreen. I have seen many travellers whose adventure has suddenly been ruined by an event as described above.

If you are camping before leaving walk around your rig and camp areas three times. So easy to overlook something and the three times rule is well worth while.

Good luck and hope to hear more about your plans.
